This article was posted in a thread earlier...

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4336553

"I am confident that the path I have chosen is the best one," Yao said. "I know I have a lot of work ahead of me before I can be back on the court, and I am committed to do whatever I can to make my recovery 100 percent successful. I have full confidence I'll play again."

The surgery will be performed next week by Dr. Tom Clanton, one of the Rockets' team physicians. If all goes well, Yao said, he could begin rehabilitation "a couple weeks" after surgery and could return to basketball activity in six months."

does Yao really belive this....i'm confused....how would it be possible for him to start rehabbing even if it is minor a few weeks after surgery...I konw Yao wants to get back on the court, but if all goes well, is it still a possibility for him to return next season...

The rockets may not say it because of the Injury exception they got from the NBA, but maybe they believe there is still a chance he could play next season...i'm just going by what Yao is saying...he must have been told that from Clanton or somebody to make that statement....
If he recovers quick, they may bring him back next season but if there is any complications, then he would miss the whole season...
I'm sure even if the Rockets belive he has a chance to play next season they won't say it because they don't want to put any extra pressure on Yao to rush back. I have a feeling Yao is still aiming at rehabbing and trying to come back next season...that is why I apprecaite the guy so much...he will work his butt off to come back and be on the court and do whatever it takes...
maybe it will workout maybe it won't....

do you all believe Yao? your thoughts...

Maybe I'm off base here, but maybe "returning to basketball activity" just means taking simple shots and moving around the court. I'm not sure.

Yeah, Yao feels that in 6 months he'll have the ability to perform simple agility drills and shoot a number of mid-range jumpers and hook shots.

I'd rather be safe than sorry, and I hope that Yao makes sure he is 100% before returning to the active roster.

If he needs the entire season like doctors are claiming, then I hope he takes the entire season.

I have heard doctors saying that this injury is so serious to a point where playing when he is not 100% ready could ruin his chances of ever walking again.

As much as I want Yao to play (and I am sure every Rocket fan here wants that) and as much as he wants to play, he needs to make sure that he has completely ready before he does. He seems like a great guy and a guy who would do anything for the team (based on the fact that he was playing on a broken foot during the entire second half of game 3) and the last thing any of us would want is for him to be permanently damaged. His health definitely comes first.

6 months means that in January, he can start doing basketball activities. Would he be ready to play during April if we were making a playoff push?

Unless we are miraculously doing well and in one of the top spots, Yao doesn't need to rush it.

I'm sure the Rockets, Team Yao, and his doctors won't let him return to teh court unless he is 100%...
but even if they let him to do simple agility drills and shoot around in 6 months, then after maybe 7 or 8 months he would be ready to jump, run, etc (play in a game)...
I'm like the majority of the people here and DO NOT want him to rush back and cause more serious injury but if he is ready to play, and is cleared then why not...
He would need clearance from many people before they would allow him to suit up for a game...but it just seems like Yao made this decision to have the surgery with the assumption that he still has a chance to come back next season if all goes well...it maybe with wishful thinking on his part but he must have gotten the timetable from the doctors (clanton, etc) to make that statement....
AT LEAST THERE IS SOME HOPE.....either way, I wish the best for the guy...he is a true warrior and is a true professional...

As much as I'd like to believe Yao, it's tough as he's probably receiving most of his information from Dr. Clanton. As Dr. Clanton's track record for surgeries on Rocket player speaks for itself (either career ending or requiring multiple surgeries), I just hope this is one he finally gets right. Just wish the Rockets and Yao could of had someone else perform it.

Ain't no way Yao is coming back during the season. It would be foolish. His career is at stake. If there are no setbacks, I imagine he'll be at Rockets training camp next fall.

    My thoughts as well.

Yao needs to take as much time to rehab and heal correctly.

Big Z played 10 months after his op.

If Yao came back earlier than planned. Does he play at the FIBA 2010 World Championships?

I love Yao's dedication to the team. But good lord somebody needs to strap him down.

Toe infection- plays for several months
1st broken foot he played for 1-2 months
last years broken foot rushes to play in bejing
This years playoff in 1st game in the lakers series, hurt his leg and doesn't want it checked. Than in game 3 plays with a stress fracture in his feet for the 2nd half.

Dedicated but dumb as an ox

Gotta love the big fellas determination. He's got one heck of a big heart. I honestly hope that he does not come back this year. Not to tank or anything like that, but if the doctors are not 200% sure then...

I mean, a few weeks ago all we were hearing was that his career was over. To start hearing some positive news is great.

Best case, Anderson gets plenty of mins and experience and next year Yao is 100% and we finally have a good (hopefully) back up to help him out. Yao will not have to play as many minutes. Less stress on the feet..

The rest of the team has had a year of progressing. Especially the new guys: Budinger, Taylor, Andersen and hopefully Dorsey. We should even end up with a decent pick in 2010 draft that could net us a contributing first year player. And the biggest piece should be the FA or two that we sign!!

And you get Yao to go with this...

    SWEET... :D

In a related story, Yao just graduated from Harvard Medical school with honors...

I'm not saying this story doesn't have weight, I just think it's suspect when the athlete gives dates. I'll believe it when I see it.

Maybe its just me but I thought Clanton wasn't with the Rockets anymore and was retiring?

Also Idk if its me but I think Yao's foot got worst when he came back too quick to play for China in the Olympics. I know it was in China and all but sometimes you have to be smart. I don't think his foot was 100% healed when he played.
