I read somewhere that the official announcement for the rookie of the year is suppose to be on April 23. From what I hear from the Yao camp that it does not look good for Yao. It would be a co-rookie as the best scenario and Stoudamire all the way as the worst scenario. Hopefully they will annouce it to the Yao camp by tomorrow. I will keep this thread posted when I hear any breaking news or development.
I think it might be a Co ROY. Amare is playing well against Dunkin...on offense. On defense the double is there every sec.
ROY present voting on NBA.com............. YM...49% AS...30% CB...10% at 11-55pm 4/21/03 Does this say anything? Recently I heard that Media were for Ym and Players were for AS. The Voters for the Awards are....?
For anyone who even thinks this is a contest, I have one simple question. Would you trade Yao for Amare? Would Phoenix trade Amare for Yao? This makes the debate completely stupid. No way in hell Amare is better trade bait than Yao, and that's all there is to it.
Do they both need the exact same votes from the voters to earn co-ROY award? (which is almost impossible, not sure how the Hill/Kidd and Francis/Brand ROY happened), or if the votes are close enough, they would declare co-ROY? -G'day-
The playoffs are a non-factor in the ROY decision. Just as the playoffs are a non-factor in the MVP award. It's either a Yao ROY or a Co-ROY w/ Amare. The latter being an injustice.
Yeah the last day for the ROY voting had to be turned in by April 17 so the playoffs does not count and from what I hear from the Yao camp which is hearing from different media and other sources and some of the voters is that its going to be Amare all the way or CO-ROY with both. I hope that its not true but that what they are saying.
Yao = 2nd option, double teamed and sometimes triple teamed. Amare = 3rd option, sometimes double teamed.
Example: How many times have you seen that SAME dunk by Amare over Olawakandi and the Clips? I'm sooooooo tired of it. It's easier to make the highlight reel over and over by dunking it than it is to make the highlight reel by making an amazing pass or monster block. Amare had the advantage from the start because all he does is dunk. Yao plays the whole game, and plays it well. Amare is just product of the highlight generation. Any true basketball fan knows that the ROY should really be no contest.
Although there might seem to be a bias for Caron Butler for ROY from the East Coast media. I've found that it's quite the opposite. Sports writers (print, not TV) from the big media outlets of the East are pro old- school. Thus, they love Yao's game because it reminds them of Celtic/Knick/Sixer basketball (Celtics 60's/80's, Knicks early 70's, Sixers early 80's). Yao is breath of fresh air from the past. Back when players knew how to play "basketball" not just score the most points. Thus, newspapers (and some on-line sites) like NY Times, Boston Herrald, Chicago Tribune, Philldephia Inquirer, are able to see through the hype. It was just that during the dunk-fest 90's, there really wasn't much to write about. Except Jordan. Now Yao has enter the scene.
It's kind of ironic that our own boys (Phi Slama Jama: Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwon) basically made the dunk the perrenial play in basketball..
Not saying that Amare does not deserve ROY, but that guy is class-less. On NBA Action last week, players were asked what they thought was the play/highlight of the season, and Amare thought Yao falling over was the best. He went on talking about how funny it was and how he and others on the bench was falling over each other laughing at the incident. This guy don't get any respect from me at all, and we are lucky to have Yao on our team. -G'day-
Did anyone notice that Amare has a temper and could be a major flagrant fouler, hes already getting a big head! He needs a dose of humble pie!
Amare really said that was the best play of the season. Dude thats harsh. Imagine Yao saying that about Amare, it would never happen. Its a very broad assumption but its kind of like an anology of most of the world doesn't like the U.S. that much. Its because of the way we act over here to other people.
That's pretty lame. Amare will probably end up like Shawn Kemp. Or at the very least, a ring-less "what if" power forward.
The Vote is decided by a panel of 120 media members from newspapers and sprots anaylysts. I think 30 from NBA, ESPN, TNT, the rest from sports writers. I could be wrong.
