Can anyone tell me how much he needs to pay CBA each year? This seems like robbery to me!

Yao needs to pull out a Wang Zhizhi and say "f** you" to the Chinese government and basketball association.

This has been talked to death before. There is no need to reopen it again.

BTW, he signed the contract with the Sharks before he became good. Nobody forced him to do that.

Fine. But $9 million even before he played a single game in the NBA? That sounds robbery to me. Actually I think that the Rockets are lucky to get him since there was a really good chance that he would never play for Houston even after he was picked #1...

If Yao would do it against his own team before, then he will do it against the Houston in the future.

    YOU GOT THAT?

You guys are kidding right? Ming can afford to pay the CBA 9 million NOW. His contracts with McDonalds, Pepis, Nike, Apple.... There are some I'm missing I'm sure, is worth probably in excess of 100 million.

So, give the CBA a break, it's call a contract and I think Ming actually got out lucky, considering how much $$$$ he's making now.

for real... remember the darko milicic saga?

i don't see how americans feel that yao is being oppressed by china. he's chinese, he's patriotic, he's abiding by the laws of his country. i'm american, i am patriotic, i would do the same thing for america.

Something is not quite right. If they are talking about US dollars, that f****ng team does not even worth half of the 9 millions. But if they were talking about Chinese money, I guess it is about right.

Would paying $9 millions free Yao once and for all?

Rockets or Team Yao should seriously consider paying $9m right now so Yao doesn't have to play in the summer for those redicious Asian championships/qualification/touring games! By the time Yao get first ring and NBA Final MVP, his annual endorsement could be worth $50 millions! Be smart. Think foward!

Asian Games aren't CBA, they're the Olympic qualifiers and whatnot, you know the games that we send our scrubs to because our best players are in the NBA?

see that works except without Yao Ming, China loses to Korea and doesn't make the Olympics. They kind of need him in there. So until some of these other prospects develop, Yao needs to play the qualifiers. I'm sure the CBA isn't getting some sort of sick pleasure from putting Yao in shackles, they just don't want to be embarrassed by not making the Olympics.

I really think that after the the Olympics is over, China may not make him go back every year. There's no point. He's not going to have to play those random Asian University games and stuff. Hell just have to play the Asian Games (which are huge, they're like the Asian Olympics -- akin to the goodwill games but bigger in China) and the Olympics. 2 summers out of every 4.

When does his contract with the Sharks end?

and Yao doesn't have anything to do with the Sharks right now, does he? He trains and plays for the Chinese national team, right?

Yeah, I was thinking something similar. And if Yao inspires a generation of basketballing Yao-wanna-be's in China, then they might be sitting pretty in the not-so-distant future.

I would pay any team in the world a few million bucks to get a Yao-like player.

If anyone to blame, you should blame the NBA for its rule that allows its teams to pay off a foreign club for no more than $300,000 to get a player. A mere $300,000? Now that is robbery.

Olympics and the qualifying games are fine. They are very short usually. But the Chinese sports ministration was milking Yao much harder. He started training in May, more than 3 months before the game. And Yao was playing in city-to-city tourament games with Australia clubs/American clubs, and Chinese Clubs, for freaking 2 months! If he plays like that every summer, he maybe wearing down quickly, and could have a career ending injuries soon.
