James led the league in scoring for the month to earn the Eastern Conference honor. He averaged 32.8 points and added 7.8 rebounds and 7.2 assists, helping the Cavaliers post an 11-3 mark in January. James became the first player in NBA history to post at least 31 points, 19 rebounds, eight assists, four blocks and three steals in a game when he accomplished the feat against Charlotte on January 11. ADVERTISEMENT At Memphis on January 15, James scored a season-high 51 points and added eight rebounds and nine assists to make him the first player since Rick Barry in 1978 to post 50 or more points, eight or more rebounds and nine or more assists in a game. Yao earned the Western Conference honor by leading the Rockets to a 10-4 month, averaging 22.4 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists. In a 111-107 win over Golden State on Tuesday, Yao tied his season high with 36 points and 19 rebounds. He is the only player in the Western Conference to be averaging at least 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks this season. Other nominees for monthly honors were Charlotte's Gerald Wallace, Denver's Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers, Toronto's Chris Bosh, Utah's Deron Williams and Washington's Caron Butler.
love this news but I must say I am surprised that Chris Paul was not even nominated. Congratulations to the big fella!
can ming get into barkley's fave five now ? barkley's new fave 5. 1. wifey 2. domino's 3. M.J 4. Tiger woods 5. yao on the outside looking in: Yi wade
now let's string together at least 8 or our next 10 games... ESPN reporting Gasol to Lakers for Brown and picks...... i must say, this makes the Lakers a much better team. What does this mean for the Rockets, road to the playoffs just got a lil bit tougher...
You should know better than that! Marcus Camby will receive his award at the end of the season when they pass out the MVP trophy.
Iverson and Williams get nominated over Chris Paul? That has to be a typo. Paul has been great, and the Hornets strung together I think 7 wins a row where they outscored the opposing team by at least 14 points each time.
For whatever reason, they listed his season averages, not his monthly averages. Actual numbers are as follows - 25.1 ppg, 11.6 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.9 bpg. .543 from the field, .840 from the line.
For a month, those might be his most impressive per game numbers of his career. I think I'll look into this.
Great performance by Yao and congrats on the award. I am glad he is getting his touch back and becoming a beast again. Now let's wait for TMac to get his touch or form back and we'll be rolling .... well oiled machine
He got it before, Nov 2006. He played at MVP level before he got hurt in Dec, 2006. It seems, one year later, he started to continue his MVP level performance.
I'd be curious to see what Yao's stats are like without that Portland game. That has to be some freakish numbers.
