I know Ming shot an incredible 75% from the floor..but my question is this: I didn't watch a lot of the World Championships but what type of shots was Ming taking? The high percentage makes me thing there were a lot of dunks and layups and putbacks..can anyone answer this?
Most of his shots were actually short jumpshots. He was almost automatic within 15 feet from the games I saw.
Yao Ming didn't really dunk or layup too much from what I saw. Most of his shots came off of jumpers, short and long range.
most of the shots that i saw were against the US team. all of his shots in those games were jumpers with a hand in his face. some were even turn around jumpers like MJ's fade-away. i even saw our rookie 7'5" center hit a 3!
i just wanted to add that yao's shots dont bounce around the rim. they all go in touching nothing but net. maybe if he is challenged it will hit the back of the rim and go in. overall, most nba guards would like to have his touch.
The sweetest Rockets touch since Billy Paultz! But seriously, I've been watching the NBA for 25 yrs, and I haven't seen many shots this sweet. Can't wait for the season.

I hope I can contribute something more than obscure jokes about the Whopper (Paultz, the Cato of the late 70's, except he didn't make much $$). But this is off the thread. I said in another thread, and I really mean it, that since Ming does NOT force shots, he could shoot an excellent % in the NBA, even around 65%.
Could somebody tell me what's the best shooting perc. for a center, or for any postion in the whole league? esp Shaq... I want to be punctilious before drawing any conclusion.
LOL! Cato is no Whopper. Cato has no go-to move. Paultz had a nice baby hook that was almost automatic. Of course, for that shot to be effective, he had to get to within 5 feet of the basket, which he had difficulty doing most of the times. If you think Collier can't jump, you should watch the Whopper! Sorry, I know this post is off topic again. But just love it when someone reminiscent the old time Rocket characters.
ccc, you might want to look up Artis Gilmore if you're talking about all-time shooting percentages. That guy didn't have Yao's touch, but he was careful with his shot selection. He had the best facial hair too. Easy, I think Paultz had a "juvenile delinquent" hook, or a "short bus" hook, but not a baby hook!

I just got some more stat about FieldGoal Percentage. The highest FG % belongs to Wilt Chamberlain in 1973 with 72.2%! I really don't want yao with a 75 percent shooting percentage because that means he's not taking enough shots. There is no reason to stop shooting if you can hit more than half of them.
If I'm not mistaken, the Whopper actually got his name in San Antonio as a Spur. Also, wasn't he considered one of the Bruise Brothers?
