For those of you who worry about Yao's stay in Shanghai because of SARS, here is
an article from sina.com descibing his first day in Shanghai.

    http://sports.sina.com.cn/k/2003-04-29/1105433286.shtml

Basically after a nice sleep, he met his former shark teammates in the training base at 8:30 am. He drove there himself with a good friend of his, Liu Wei(if you watched all star special on interviewing Yao Ming's Shanghai shark's teammate right before the all star game, Liu Wei was the guy that talked to the CNN reporter, and he is also playing point for Sharks and National team. He played with Yao since they were teenagers in the youth team). Liu commented on Yao's driving skill when asked, he said Yao drove not bad. ( I am surprised that he could drive already in Shanghai, maybe he's got special license, or maybe he doesnt need one, it's really toguh to drive there because of so many bikes and people jay walking all the time)
Yao missed seeing the shark's head coach in the trainning base. he then went to the gym with Liu Wei to shoot around with him for while. It was mainly Liu Wei's conditioning purpose because he needs to report to the NT next week.

At noon, Yao and Liu along with another Shark's friend left trianning base. They went straight to a internet cafe near Yao's home to play warcraft and counter strike. There the yao's gang receive speical treatment from the owner by allowing them to play in VIP room. Although Yao's arrival generated a little frenzy among other people who were using the cafe at that time, it calmed down not long after, it seems that people there were more interested in gaming than meeting basketball star.

There was a camera crew accompanying Yao all the way on his outting, the crew works for NBA to caputure Yao's daily life in Shanghai. (That gotta be annoying). At 6:30 Yao suggested go to Peace hotel(one of the most prestigious hotels in Shanghai, located in downtown) to have western style dinner. He then arrived at home around 8:30, a 12 hour outting!

In another similar tabloid article, Yao was aksed if he's scared of SARS, he said he is not, if he were, he wouldnt return to shanghai so soon. he siad he believes that washing hands often should take care of it.

So folks, it seems our big fella is having fun in Shanghai, not too worry.

He should be playing NBA live, posting up in the paint and learning some spin moves to the basket.

why is it called a "training base?" seems kinda military-esque. is that where that "all your base are belong to us" stuff comes from.;)

I didn't know washing hands would prevent the transmission of an airborne disease.
