It was sporting talent of the world. He won from a soccer player, and a dutch speedskater (uytenhagen). i haven't read it anywere so i wonder if it already is posted. and i think it is great he won it.

Yao Ming just won the greatest person in human existence award. He took the title from Jesus Christ, who had won the award for 2,002 consecutive years. Jesus was unavailable for comment...:)

Yao Named Laureus World Newcomer of the Year
    By
    NBA.com

Houston Rockets center Yao Ming was awarded the Laureus World Newcomer of the Year for his impressive rookie season in the NBA. The 7-foot-6, 296-pound center averaged 13.5 points (on .498 shooting) with team highs of 8.2 rebounds and 1.74 blocks in 82 games (72 starts) with the Rockets, earning selection to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and the 2003 NBA All-Star Team. The first-ever number one overall draft pick to come from an international basketball league, Yao stood as the only rookie to rank in the NBA's Top 20 in three statistical categories, ranking 15th in field goal percentage, 15th in blocked shots per game and 18th in rebounds per game.

"I appreciate the recognition," Yao said. "I must share this honor with my teammates and coaches in China and in Houston. They gave me the precious gift of friendship to keep me going in good times and in bad times alike. I must also share this honor with all my fans, who made my dreams of playing professional basketball possible. This award will motivate me to aim high, and to achieve higher goals through dedication and hard work."

Among NBA rookies, Yao ranked second in scoring average, second in rebounding average, first in blocks per game and third in field goal percentage. The Western Conference Rookie of the Month for both December and February also led all rookies with a team-high 27 double-doubles, standing tied for 16th in the NBA. In addition, Yao posted a rookie-leading efficiency rating of 17.65. The third Chinese player in NBA history, Yao ranked 13th in the NBA with an efficiency rating per 48 minutes of 29.16.

A member of the Chinese National Team, Yao led the Rockets in rebounds per game and blocks per game, standing as the only rookie to lead his team in both categories. The starting center for the 2003 Western Conference All-Star Team, Yao led the Rockets in points 11 times, rebounds 37 times and assists twice. He set career highs with 30 points on Nov. 21 at Dallas and 19 rebounds on Mar. 23 at Sacramento. The fifth number one overall draft pick in franchise history recorded at least three blocks 26 times during his rookie campaign, as Houston held a 22-4 record in these contests. He also posted the highest field goal percentage in NBA history over a six-game stretch, making 31-of-35 shot attempts for an accuracy of 88.6 percent from Nov. 9-21.

The Laureus World Sports Awards Ceremony, which boasts a worldwide TV audience of 320 million people, has established a unique place in the sporting calendar, honoring the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen from around the world and across all sports. The winners are selected by 41 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy.

You dont realy deserve a reply! I just wont let you get away with such blatant low class street language. Please try to improve your vocabulary and show a little more respect of your fellow members. We are brothers together, fans and supporters of the Houston Rockets, lets be kind to each other, we can differ and disagree but let us not get so abusive.

Hmmm, I think I have to agree with Yetti on the fact that A- Train cross the line w/ his second comment. But I did find the Jesus refrence to be amusing. But it also raises an interesting question, should a joke about christianity be considered less offensive than a joke about a black, hispanic or asian person?

Or is it seen that with Christianity denouncing a lot of other people (gays, pro choice, feminists etc etc) is it then justified because its seen as a responsive?

I don't know and it prolly doesn't have to with GA & RM so I'll stop talking about it.

I think the tension is getting to everyone. Tolarance is a good thing... just breath.... in through the nose, out through the mouse, repeat until calm has been achieved....
