****in gay. Hopefully the docs say he needs a couple of months of rest, maybe the Rockets can pay for that kind of rest?

Well - he's at the hospital right now getting his ankle MRI'ed . . . so let's wait and see what the prognosis is on his ankle before jumping to any premature conclusions.

BEIJING (AP) -- China's basketball association said Monday it expects Houston Rockets star Yao Ming to play for his national team in the Asian Championships in September, likely stamping on his plans to spend the summer resting.

Yao has divided his time between Houston and China's national team since joining the NBA in 2002, keeping him playing almost year-round.

"As a member of the China National Team, Yao Ming must come back to play for China, according to the contract," said Li Jinsheng, a spokesman for the China Basketball Association.

All other team members are already in Beijing preparing for the Asian Championships in Qatar on Sept. 8-16, according to Li.

"Yao Ming is expected to come to China soon and he will join the team for training in June after a short period of rest," Li said.

Yao said this month that he hoped to take the summer off.

"I just want to relax," he told The Associated Press in Houston. "I don't want to do anything. I'm not too used to being relaxed."

Yao's commitments to China's national team meant he is often not in peak condition during the 82-game NBA season.

Great... nothing like year-round basketball after ankle surgery - an ankle that supports 310 lbs. of potential. Can't wait to see Yao put up 90 pts and 55 rebs per game against the uber Asian teams then come here and probably blow it out.

Yes I'm pissed about all this.

Man, when is Yao gonna be able to work on his game during the summer? Can you imagine how good he would be conditioning wise and performance wise if he were to improve a little bit each summer?
I trust the Rockets to do what's best for Yao, but at the same time I don't think the Rockets can influence Yao to forego all of his responsibilities with the national team

All Yao needs is the doctors to say his ankle needs the res after surgery. I bet that happens.

It will be fine guys. He's only getting loose particles removed from his ankle. It's not like he's getting major reconstructive ankle surgery. Also, last year he showed up to the CNT a bit out of shape and with a bum toe. I would also assume the Olympics would be much more mentally taxing than the Asian championships.

What Yao will miss out on here is conditioning and perfecting some of his go-to moves in the summer. He will also lose a chance to work in the summer with Tracy. These are the trade-offs we have to live with.

I wonder what the CNT practice about every summer? How come you never see some improvements.

Although I would love for Yao to be able to rest and work on his game over the summer, we have to remember, we are talking about a NBA team that is entertainment vs. a Chinese National team where he plays to represent his country.

Now if the CNT gives him the ok to skip out, so be it, but I wouldn't get "pissed/mad" at a man going to represent his country.

I mean I guess in a way, he'd also represent China becoming even more successful in the NBA. But according to the article written he's under contractual obligation to play for the CNT, so what can ya do?

    yup.

nothing but respect for Yao for honoring his commitments. The Rockets organization respects him for the same which has earned Yao's loyalty to the Rox.

Hopefully at some point China will decide that Yao's success on the NBA stage is a success for China. Then he'll get some rest and some time to work on conditioning and upper body strength.

Regardless, you know the Rockets will have someone over there with him keeping him on course.

Maybe so, but their best chance to medal is for Yao to become completely dominant. I don't know what his regimen should be in the off-season, but it's been far from ideal the previous 3.

And what's different this year is that Yao hasn't sounded like he wants to go back to China asap. Though know doubt he does sometime during the off-season.

I just think he could benefit tremendously by hanging out at Westside and playing with the usual suspects.

the surgery isn't that serious. and im sure the CNT wouldn't make him play before they get an ok from the docs.

and yes it sucks that he doesn't get rest but everyone knew this was gonna be deal when we signed him.

Why in the hell do they need to train for 2-3 months? The games arent till Sep yet meeting up in June? WTF? Hell, tranning camp is a week and Preseason is 3 weeks at most. Just for a yearly Asian Games Tournament, all u need is like 3-4 weeks MAX. Worthless I say, just plain dumb....

The World Basketball Championship Tournament is next year too eh? Thats going to be a pain in the ass.... :(

Didn't we all wonder about the same thing when Steve was here? I heard he and other NBA players worked hard on their games every Summer.;)

I am a lawyer, and don't know a thing about international law, but the legality of the Rockets - Yao Ming - China contract intrigues me. If anybody has information on this issue, post it here or email me at philip_w_moore_jrAThotmail.com.

    Thanks,

I don't think there ever was any contract between the Rockets and the Chinese partners. It was a hands-shake deal, with the understanding that Yao will play for China in the international competitions.

However, there are contracts between Yao and this former team, the Sharks, and between Yao and the CBA. No one but "Team Yao" and their Chinese partners know the details.
