...in Athens, as reported by German media.

They would have the tallest guy (ever?) to do that! :)

Yao Ming to carry China's flag at Olympics

Beijing, China, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Yao Ming, the seven-foot-six-inch NBA star, will carry China's flag at the Olympic opening ceremony, China Daily said Tuesday

Yao, who plays center for China's national team and for the Houston Rockets, was chosen to lead a Chinese delegation of 407 athletes and 230 coaches and officials at the Friday ceremony, despite arguments from detractors that his conspicuous height might be an eyesore, the paper said.

"He is a man of integrity and has a good sense of humor," delegation official Xiao Tian told the Xinhua News Agency. "He is the perfect one to be the flag-bearer."

China hopes to win 20 gold medals and retain its third-place standing behind the United States and Russia in the Olympic games, China Daily said. Chinese athletes are traditionally strongest in table tennis, badminton, diving and men's gymnastics.

I like how they took sense of humor into account when selecting their flag-bearer. :)

Yao's not perfect, but he's alot closer to perfection than the vast majority of the NBA players.

BTW, who's the flag carrier for the US? Iverson? Marbury? Mike Tyson?

I tend to agree that Yao is, in general, a much better representative of his country than many NBA players would be of the USA. He has more than his share of humility, deference to authority, and national pride than most of the NBA players. I am sure that this has a lot to do with simply being Chinese as they are indoctrinated with those qualities from a very early age.

Unfortunately, many of the American NBA stars tend to act more like spoiled children than grown men (Duncan and KG would be obvious exceptions).

In the past, China always has someone from the men's basketball team to be the flag carrier despite their poor showing in the Olympics, and there were another 4 to 6 guys/gals as the guards of the carrier.

But this time, I heard that a decision was made not to have any guard for the flag carrier, because Yao's height will make them look out of sync.;)
