I came accross an interesting thread in Orlando Magic's realgm message board "comparing" these two players - for now or posterity.

So I ask - who would you rather have on your team now or later? And why?

    Thanks.

    dwight howard

The kid is the same size as shaq at his age, and is quick Amare. He is already a better defender, rebounder, and ball handler. He has better hands than Yao meaning he can catch the ball in traffic. He doesn't have the shooting touch but he can develop it and he also has shown great work ethic. The most important thing is that he isn't intimidated by anyone and doesn't overthink on the court

dwight howard.all i see missing from him is a lil 20 foot jumper which I saw him knock down a couple of times already.I don't have to scream at the tv and tell him to dunk the ball like I have to do yao and from what I see if you come to the basket weak he will send your stuff to the next side of the floor.the kid has all the athlletic tools you need to be dominat beides shooting touch, but I think its better then alot of us know already.

Dwight easily. The dude already averages a double double in limited minutes. He's relentless, a quick jumper, strong around the rim, a good blocker, plus, he's a good guy. I really like Yao, but Dwight will be much better.

    Yao

He is 7'6" and when he finally gets a coach who understand how to utilize his strengths, he will explode.

    Howard.

Physically, the guy is the most impressive player in the league. Reminds me a lot of David Robinson. There really are no limits to how good he can be. He’s got talent, athleticism, size, and a great work ethic.

Yao can be a very good player as well, but I do think there are always going to be limits to how good he can be due to his lack of stamina, his fragile mindset, and his lack of mobility.

You have to wonder what Mcgrady is thinking right now watching this kid play.

I know... I remember reading somewhere that he didn't want to rebuild with a draft pick but instead trade for a vet player. but know one would have thought D Howard was going to play so good so soon.
too bad we got the wrong Howard from the Magic...

For one, maybe two seasons you take Yao, after that Howard should be close to either KG, Duncan, or maybe even David Robinson probably a combination of the three. The worst he could be is a seven foot Ben Wallace.

Howard is special, but Yao is the future here...Yao, is having a difficult year, but that doesn't mean he's finished...

    Yao, hands down...

Last year at this time, Yao vs. LeBron was running about neck and neck. This year it's not even close.

I think it will eventually be the same way with Howard, he is going to be a very special player.

I've often wondered the same thing. With him, and now having Hill back would Mcgrady have been happier over there? I think so.

He would have a better record, and the ability to get some early offense, and not have to worry about defensive rebounding so much.

Wow Yao is losing at home? On his home site? Seems like SOF want to use this to get back to Yao ;)

I picked Yao. Yao tome has more upside and he is durable. Yao in a few years will finish this year near 20-10. I doubt if Dwight will get there in 3 years. Yao will continue to develop as well as Dwight but Yao to me become a top 5 player in the NBA. I do not see Dwight being a top 10 in 10 years from now and I cannot wait for our visit to Orlando in January.

Obviously you've never seen dwight howard play. Howard will be a 18-20 and 12 guy by next year before his 20th birthday. Dwight has more upside than Amare and Amare is better than Yao is now. Yao is better than Dwight now and maybe next year, but I doubt beyond that. Dwight Howard has the potential to be Shaq.

What did it for me was seeing him cover Croshere and Amare on the perimeter. He stayed in front of them and blocked their shots. No 7 foot tall 260+ pound 19 year old should be able do to that.

well, the poll results just tell you how supportive our own fans are. On second note, since most of you guys think Howard will be better than Yao soon, should we work on siginig him and build the team around Howard and T-Mac?

Yao already is a very special player. I am more and more getting the impression that you are just a Yao hater because you liked Steve Francis so much and somehow blame Yao that the sentiment here became so anti-Francis. Just my impression from how you constantly keep putting Yao down.

Okay we shall see about that. I cannot believe that Dwight has more upside than Amare. But everyone is entitle to their scouting abilities and opinion. Also I do not see Orlando building around him like Amare and Yao.

Yao will perenially draw double and tripple teams more than Amare or Dwight could even imagine. All Yao needs now is for those around him to hit open shots and a "true" power forward on his side.
