No one else can act as their flag bearer at the opening ceremony.Firstly ,yao may be the highest man in china and he may be the most famous as well.secondly, they are gonna let yao hold the flag again according his contributions to his country. As we all know ,yao makes 30m per year, but his yearly imcome is just 2m,where has yao's money gone? Yao has to pay 45percent of his imcomes to US as taxes .For an American ,the rest money will go to his pocket directly. However ,yao is a foreigner except when he is in China.I mean dirk doesn't have to pay extra bills except taxes,as well as pau and any other international rost.Man ,paying the taxes is one's obligation, but i don't think the taxes should take 90 percent. For example, dirk earns 30m from US and pays 14m back to US,then he pays 50 percent of the rest 16m to his homecountry--Ger.As a result, dirk remtains 8m in his wallet. However, how does it happen that yao losts most of his money?
The answer is obvious, the money is taken by his former club--shanghai sharks.( i think his damn former club is even more greedy and dangerous than the real shark).Isn't it rediculous for a superstar to earn just 2m per year? of course the rookies are exceptions. :D the money taken by the sharks also needs to be devided into several pieces ,each of which will be taken by various apartments, the CBa,basketball associeation of shanghai ,etc.
In a word ,yao has been contributing hugh amount of money to his country and pockets just 2m per year.Further more, yao donated 2m which is his imcome of the entire year for the earthquake victims.in fact ,yao is the bigest victim of china, is a victim of the bare robery.

I understand that the Olympics are in China this year, but couldn't they give someone else a chance? Yao already carried the flag in the last Olympics.

Our flag bearer isn't a high profile athlete. Our flag bearer is a former Sudanese refugee with a 'good' story that almost nobody knows about.

China wants to bolster its image in the eyes of the world. Yao is a recognizable, amicable, and lovely face. They pick him, because we're not suspicious of him or find him to be that foreign and mysterious. America knows him as the Western Conference All-Star.

    That's my guess.

China's last 6 flag bearers were from the basketball team.

rua2006's point is that if it is not for politics, their flag bearer would be their PG Liu Wei (sp?).

    Sorry rua2006...can't help it...no offense....
