    Yao's The Man

Russell Flannery, 02.10.04, 5:00 PM ET

HONG KONG - Houston Rockets star Yao Ming regularly towers over NBA competitors on the basketball court. The Chinese sports hero also topped all his countrymen to rank No. 1 on our first Forbes China Celebrity List, released today by Forbes China, the Chinese-language edition of Forbes magazine.

The list surveyed the income and popularity of leaders in film, sports, media, music and publishing. Listees were born and raised in mainland China; celebrities from Hong Kong and Taiwan weren't included. The China list is modeled on our annual Celebrity 100 list.

Yao led the way based on heavy exposure in media and Web hits in China; he also had the second-highest 2003 income among mainland Chinese celebrities, at $14.6 million. Hollywood star Jet Li ranked No. 1 in income, with earnings of $17 million last year. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actress Zhang Ziyi ranked No. 2 in the overall list, and international film star Gong Li was No. 5.

"The list reflects the rapid growth in China's entertainment industry," list compiler Bobby Hao says. "It's clear that more and more people from the mainland are making an impact and finding success overseas."

    Congrats to Yao.

But I'd rather sleep with Gong Li:

Dude, isn't Gong Li fromour parent's generation (ok, maybe you're much older than me). I definitely prefer Zhao Wei and Zhang Zi Yi to her. On a sidenote, they didn't add Taiwan or Hongkong to the list, what gives?
