Read this interesting article from Wang Meng.

Do you guys think Yao Ming likes VSpan, and hopes everything is going to work out fine with the Greek ?

Whoa, Yao is blaming V-Span's performance and not JVG! Doesn't he know that JVG doesn't know how to develop rookies and Euros?

    As an interesting side note:

V-Span is shooting .447% from inside the arc this year, compared to Rafer's .379% inside the arc.

If V-Span can improve on his abysmal 20% from 3pt range, he may have a chance to take over for Alston next year.

    Stats for season

V-Span could play the role of Tony Parker for the Rockets, mid-range game and going strong to the hole.

Don't forget about the turnovers, DD.

But I agree, if Spanoulis suddenly becomes a dependable ball-handler and three-point shooter, then yes, there will be a spot for him.

You missed the best part of that article. Billy is winning the Rockets' March Madness pool. Further proof that the less you know about college basketball, the better your chances of winning.

Another interesting side note: V-Mac has a looong way to go before he can play in an NBA rotation. Hopefully he comes back a much improved player next season.

I don't think he is that far away now. He just needs time on the court to get comfortable with the players and plays.

That will not happen this year, I am resigned to that, but next year....we really need V-Span to stay in Houston this summer and work on his 3pt shooting and getting comfortable in the offense.

Hopefully next year he can be the backup PG, and the closer....eventually supplanting Rafer.

I'm not willing to put my trust in V-Mac. Our #1 priority in the offseason should be a new starting PG who would push Rafer into his natural backup position. If Span pushes Rafer aside and becomes the backup, that's good with me but I won't hold my breath.

This inspired me to do a little more research on our guards and their 2pt shooting percentages.

    Snyder .547% - WOW !!!!
    JL3 .494%
    Tmac .464%
    V-Span .447 %
    Bonzi .432%
    Luther .419%
    Rafer .379%

It seems that our team is not very effecient inside the arc, and isn't it ironic that the 2 guys who play the most at the PG position are our worst shooters inside the arc....and that includes all those little cuts to the basket for layups that Luther gets, he must really suck at the midrange game.

We should get a more balanced attack and use more midrange when our 3pters aren't falling, but you can see by the stats above that we don't have most of the guys that are good from 2pt range in the rotation enough, so when our 3s aren't falling, our 2 primary guys at PG, have no other option...

So, it is 3pt or bust this year boys and girls.

    Link for sortable 2pt percentage

Interesting side note, huh? First of all the V-Mac stuff is BS and you know it. It's exactly like when JFK made his famous speech at the Berlin wall and colloquially said "I am a jelly doughnut". And JVG hung V-Span out to dry over it.

There's no way you can say V-Span couldn't crack an NBA rotation this year, all we can say is he couldn't get into JVG's.
And by the way the quote by Yao, no matter how well translated, may not mean what you think it does.

Interesting side note, after last night's game thread I have a distinct urge to use DaDak's head for virtual T-ball batting practice. Instead I'm posting something he supports and against a post from someone who always makes good sense.

    Thanks, I think !

You do know that sometimes the game thread is just venting during the game, right?

I call em like I see em, if the team is stinking, I am going to call em out...very JVG like, aren't I !

My posts the next morning are generally much better than my posts directly after a loss, the next morning stuff is well thought out, the ones during a loss.....can sometimes be a bit...reactionary.

Just a bit though...a teeny tiny bit.

VSpan will be making some extra cash. This guy is a lucky lenny, he should be playing backup pg minutes. Oh well maybe next year.

I am making good sense here also. You just haven't had your morning coffee yet. ;)

On a serious note, I am truly shocked you are on the V-Span wagon with DD. Oh well, we can pick this conversation up again in October if Span is still a Rocket. I really want him to succeed but it looks doubtful.

Not only our guards, but the whole league are having trouble with mid-range games. Mid-range jumper is a lost art, that's also why Sam is so special. Nowadays, young players play either long 3 or dunks, pull-up jumpers are just not sexy enough for them. How many times you see a guard can pick a dribble and drain a jumper with high efficiency except for a hand full players?

Speaking of our guards, aside from Alston's shooting and Head's decision making, my biggest concern is their defense. Especially Rafer, he did try, but he gives up baseline too easily, and he gambles too much. Why can't he take a page from Shane?

.............meanwhile, VSpan's numbers continue to improve playing junk minutes after a dismal season start.

Prediction: VSpan's shooting percentages surpass John Lucas by the end of this season.

I only believe my eyes, Span is a good player, but he got no real minutes.

    Thanks for posting pryuen.

I rememeber when Rockets.com used to post the players brackets. I wish they still did that. I'd like to see Yao's picks. :)

There is 0% ability to project Silly Billy's '07-'08 campaign. The man has talent but like Yao like Boki like other 'imports' (from international ball AND college ball) he needs to acclimatize himself to the NBA game.

This league does not play like FIBA (check the USA in the World's & Oly's) nor like the NCAA.

If VSpan adapts, in all phases, I suspect he will be a quality rotation guy. I suspect his upside is greater than Lil Luke's (after all, there was reported discussion in moving JL15 in February; what does that say ?...and it's more than mj coming, it's a nod to the future IMO).
