after watching yao ming's first season, i came away extremely impressed and encouraged. his ceiling, physically speaking, is higher than any center i have ever seen. he has the entire package:

    - footwork
    - strength
    - finesse
    - court vision

with every interview, i have become more and more appreciative to have him as a houston rocket. he is polite and witty. he is also very humble. but will his humility ultimately be his downfall?

i am of the opinion that in order to dominate in the nba, you need to have an aggressive edge. this is not to say that one must emulate anthony mason. but you do need to have the mindset to destroy your opponent. tim duncan, for all his blandness, has it. shaq, for all his eccentricities, has it. they will dunk on their man as many times as possible. they will score, repeatedly, on their man (or sometimes 2 or 3 men) until they cannot do so any more. they become what i call a "one man wrecking crew".

can yao develop this aggressiveness, and at the same time, be so humble as to not believe he can beat shaq. as a dominant ballplayer, i believe you need to hold the entire nba in contempt. i believe you need to almost be insulted that any one man believes he can cover you; and when confronted with that, find the bsst way possible to obliterate your man...repeatedly...endlessly...until it is established that you are the "alpha baller".

what do you guys think? is it possible to achieve the aggressiveness while being ever so humble? i know hakeem was humble, but he had the aggressive side first. he learned to be humble. yao is humble from onset. can you learn to be aggressive?

I think Yao was being a rookie and a diplomat last year. I don't expect him to be either this year.

I believe he will fulfill your hopes of additional aggressiveness.

Yeah Yao can be aggresive... it just all depends on how he develops to the nba... but as i could see last year he was getting more aggresive... I think he got tired that refs were being not fair him... i think all the scratches on his back got to him...

take it easy,it is just a way of yao to beat big o off court.

he just want big o to take him easy next season. you know, big o is just like a big boy who would like to listen to yao's words of this way.

ummm... what's up with your username.

okay.. back to the thread topic...

verse, as much as i like to bash yao for the same thing... i really can't. would you have rather him come into the league and say "i don't respect nobody" like iverson did? can you imagine what that would have done to his image and china's image by him saying that?

we've seen flashes of the "don't give me any schit" attitude from yao last season. what happened when a player from the opposing team successfully dunked on yao? yao was soooo embarrassed that he immediately ran down the floor and tried to return the favor. i don't think he's as nice as most folks think.

i've said it over and over... i witnessed yao's first technical here in atlanta while screaming in the face of ratliff. yao's got some rage in him. van gundy will teach him... and if he doesn't learn (though i'm sure he will), i'm sure van gundy will have the nerve to bench his arse.

That is terribly common among sports fans, unfortunately. We want them to be warriors on the field or court and gentle philanthropists off.

I don't think being aggressive in the basketball sense is the same as being arrogant or having a mean/nasty personality.

Being aggressive is being not afraid to go against tough opposition. It is the confidence that you can score or get the rebound when you want to. Aggressiveness and humility shouldn't be mutually exclusive.

I play with a big guy who is the best rebounder I've ever played with and he's virtually unstoppable in the paint (when he plays with scrubs like me). I say he is one heck of an aggressive player. But he is also a very nice guy. He'll never deliberately hurt anyone. When he knocks you down by accident, he will help you up and appologize and ask if you're OK.

    Thank you!

Tim Duncan isn't like this. Larry Bird wasn't like this. Even Jordan wasn't really like this on the court. The latter 2 would talk all kinds of trash to you, but they weren't some thugs. They just drove nail after nail into your heart and kept talking. Duncan just destroys you while you keep saying "no way he should be doing this to me".

To clarify, I want Yao to be aggressive with the basketball, not necessarily at his opponent. I don't want him screaming at players after a dunk. I don't want him staring people down. An example of what I want is what he did to Ben Wallace... back him down, back him down, throw one down on his noggin, and run back to play some defense.

I find it difficult to imagine that Yao would ever become very aggressive from a personal standpoint -- but on the other hand, it's pretty easy to picture him doing it for the sake of the team. If he thinks (or is told) that he needs to kick some serious a$$ in an important game, I'd be willing to bet that he'd put on a scowl and throw a few elbows. He as dedicated a team player as I've seen in the league since Magic.

Yao is quite a traditional Chinese. i.e. you have to look humble even you are not. Believe, Yao has a monster inside himself. There will come a day he let the monster come out totally, to dominate. It won't be long, coz we saw bit of it in the Alanta game last season.

Methinks he should meditate to a pic of Theo Ratliff every night.

Don't make Yao angry...you wouldn't like Yao when he's angry.

    Yao: RAAAAARRRRR!

    Ahhh!

the right word isn't aggressiveness, it's more their competitiveness I think.

very good thread going on here by the way.
