He doesn't have to defect while another option is open for him: immigration. His cousion/representative Eric Zhang did so when he was 10 and now a free US citizen, and it won't surprise me at all if Yao does the same thing. There is no law in China or the US that prohibits him from applying for immigration. PS. Yao Ming's first name is Ming, not Yao as many of you think so. If he likes, I think he can change his name when he becomes a US citizen-- how about Mingestic??
I thought he was incredibly patriotic and had no desire to become a US citizen. I thought he would never even talk to Faulk again because he brought up defection in one of their conversations. Have things changed?
you're chinese too, huh? ------------------------------- Amazing, isn't it? With Rockets drafting and keeping Yao, this board will draw at least 1000 Chinese basketball fans!!! You can take my word.
Karl Hugus --------------------------------- I thought he was incredibly patriotic and had no desire to become a US citizen. ----------------------------------- He may be very patriotic, but if he has to give up halp of his salary and even all of his career to be patriotic, he would concider alternatives. --------------------------------------------------- I thought he would never even talk to Faulk again because he brought up defection in one of their conversations. --------------------------------------------------- In a dictatorship country, what do you expect him to response when a 'politically incorrect' answer may cost his career and his family. ------------------------------------------------------ Have things changed? ----------------------------------------------------- Hopefully his cousin Eric already starts to work on this.
It clacks me up when people referred Yao’s last name as Ming. It’s like me saying I’ve been known Ross Perot for a long time. Mr. Ross is a friend of mind. Lose creditability fast when you don’t know the person’s last name.
First of all, Hungus is his first name. Second, on behalf of David Falk, I urge Chinese posters not to take it personally that Mr. Falk invited Yao Ming to defect to the United States. I want to assure you that Mr. Falk has nothing against China in particular. It's just that he has no comprehension of loyalty in general.
-------------------------------------- First of all, Hungus is his first name. ---------------------------------------------- Then Karl is his last name!! Unless you persoally know him (as a clutch crew member, you might get access to his persoal info), I think you are kidding. Actually I don't find Mr. Falk's suggestion insulting in any way, and I don't think many Chinese fans do either, except the Government.
Immigration? This is a high profile guy. He's heroes to hundreds of millions. What does that do to China when their hero decides to apply for American citizenship given the current anti-US sentiment the Chinese government is promoting? A slap in the face? A sellout? Or a pioneer?
We don't want that. The board went down when a 3 hundred people logged in on lottery day. Clutch would have to start charging so he can upgrade his server.
Defection is unnecessary. Just look at those Chinese soccer players. Their teams are just so happy to send their players out to Europe top leagues. These players are not required to spend several months each year in China. Although they need to play for China in Asian Cup or World Cup, they are not needed for most of the training camps. I believe basketball in China will take the same road. As the Chinese sports authorities are setting soccer league as a model for commercialize its sports industry.
Why do the Chinese people have their surname before their "first" (really a oxy-moron) name? I've always wondered why Wang ZhiZhi turned into ZhiZhi Wang.
----------------------------------- Clutch would have to start charging so he can upgrade his server. ------------------------------------- This site from time to time becomes very slow esp. when a page is refreshed. Is it a server issue, or a hosting bandwidth issue. No matter how I want to see this problem solved. Charging for posting? This is a opiton but I am afraid this would scare some fans away, esp. for Chinese fans who simply don't have US$ to pay for this (certainly Clutch does not take Chinese RMB money, right?)
Although I would gladly pay, I don't think it will come to that. I'm sure many posters here and the rockets organization would gladly donate money to clutch to keep this site running and running well. Also, I'm pretty sure it is a server issue since WWW is seldomly effected when the BBS goes down. I imagine it can be quite processor intensive when hundreds of people are logged on.
Having a fan club for Ming Yao may not be a bad idea. http://www.directron.com/yaoming.html "NYKRule: Why do the Chinese people have their surname before their "first" (really a oxy-moron) name? " It has been like for thousands years. There is no widely known reason for it. I guess the Chinese culture prefers to put "bigger/more important" things first. Another interesting phenomenon is that the Chinese write address just in the reverse order as in English. In English: Individual Name Street Address City, State, Country. In Chinese: Country, State, City Street Address Individual Name I can see the advantage of the Chinese style: That's the order the mail cover gets read and identified.
