I guess this should belong to the Dedicated Thread of Yao Ming's Rehabilitation (2008).

But I am too lazy to look it up as the thread could be drowned in the many other newly added threads.

And I hope you guys can forgive me for such laziness.....

But just could not hold back the excitement and want to share this news with you all.

Anyway, here is the latest update from Wang Meng of Titan Sports on Yao Ming.

The workaholic Yao Ming had started his rehabilitation for a few days now !!!

And Russ Paine, the Houston Rockets' physcial therapist, even cracked a joke about his possible return in Final if he keeps on his current favorable progress of his restoration/rehabilitation !!

On the day after the Houston Rockets returned from Atlanta, Yao Ming appeared in Toyota Centre. Even though there was no way he could yet drive, although he had to rely on his crutches to move around, he decided it is about time that he started his rehabilitation. Yao Ming just could no longer bear wasting time by sitting at home, lying on bed and doing nothing. He wanted to return to Toyota Centre, where his team just kept on its winning streak sprinting for the playoff, to start his own dash (towards a total restoration and rehabilitation of his injury).

Even though he had rested for more than 2 weeks, just from his appearance, Yao Ming did not seem to have gained much weight. According to him, he now only weighs 310 pounds; compared to his body weight prior to the injury, he had only gained 10 pounds. (He was able to control his weight) because he only ate twice a day, drank tea and water only, and stayed away from all kinds of snacks and junk food. Yao Ming had done all he could in his power so as to be able to reduce the lead time in his restoration/ rehabilitation. And now that he could start his rehabilitation, it made Yao Ming feel much more steadfast; regardless how little could be done yet, to him, it is already much better than just laying down on his bed and doing nothing at home.

Yao Ming said: “Starting from this day onward, except for weekends, I will be here at Toyota Centre for my rehabilitation (on my ankle) as well as strength and conditioning exercise for my upper limbs. I will do as much as I can as long as those exercises/training are within the scope permitted by the doctors.” Actually what Yao Ming could do now was very limited. They were limited to some strenuous oxygen training/exercises on his upper limbs such that he could perspire and consume some energy. And then under the supervision of his personal trainer, Anthony Falsone, Yao Ming would do some strength and conditioning exercises on his upper limbs. Anthony Falsone and his assistants were taking extreme care to control the weights of the upper limbs practice to prevent any slightest possibility of mishaps that would add pressure to Yao Ming’s ankle; it was because the doctors had urged that no force could be applied to Yao Ming’s ankle in another 6 weeks’ time.

Of course, his ankle did not stay idle; Under Russ Paine’s help, Yao Ming already started some very slight and micro activities on his ankle area. Russ Paine (Houston Rockets’ physical therapist) is an extremely renowned physical therapist. He had assisted many other sports athletes to get back into their top competitive form and shape in their restoration/rehabilitation. Right after Yao Ming’s his knee surgery last summer, it was Russ Paine who attended to Yao Ming’s restoration/rehabilitation. Yao Ming said: “Last year, if not for his help, it was impossible for me to be able to recover and rehabilitate so quick, and it would also be impossible that I could keep up and maintain such great conditions upon my return.” Steve Francis is the other patient of Russ Paine. Actually, before Steve Francis trade (to Orlando Magic), he was already under the constant care of Russ Paine.

Russ Paine told the reporter: “Yao's Ming present condition is extremely good. All that we could do now is some slight stretching exercises on his leg, feet and ankle. The purpose for such exercise is to prevent the muscle there becoming too stiff. After all, he had not been able to move for more than 2 weeks now. And such exercises can fasten his path to total restoration.”

Russ Paine took extreme care to do some inside-out, up-and-down directional movement activities on Yao Ming’s ankle; all such activities are extremely slight; any excessive force applied could possibly aggravate the wound conditions. Therefore Russ Paine was like handling diamonds when holding Yao Ming’s big foot. Beside the ankle, Russ Paine also gave Yao Ming’s right shoulder some physical therapy. He said: “Since we have ample of time, we might as well try to provide him the best of our services such that when he could return to court right after a full restoration/ rehabilitation of his ankle, his shoulder could also be restored.”

Actually, right after Yao Ming’s surgery on his stress fractured ankle, the doctors had already planned for such a restoration/rehabilitation program. After a few days’ observation of Yao Ming’s recovery situation after his surgery, the doctors decided to kick-start the implementation of the restoration/ rehabilitation program to help Yao Ming for a faster recovery. According to the program, Yao Ming must continue to rely on his crutches for walking for 4 weeks. After that he could do away with the crutches and walk on his own. And 2 weeks from now, Yao Ming should be able to and allowed to start some very slight under-water treatment/exercise. Of course, all such activities will have to be under constant surveillance and monitoring of the doctors. They hope they could help Yao Ming to recover and rehabilitate as soon as possible; but they also hope the restoration/rehabilitation will be a complete one that Yao Ming can return completely healthy.

Russ Paine commented that the current restoration of Yao Ming looked extremely ideal; they even cracked a joke with Yao Ming: “According to your current progress, if the Rockets can advance deep and further in the playoffs and reach the Final, maybe you will be able to make it just in time and be allowed to play in the Final.”

Now that he can start his rehabilitation training, Yao Ming was a very happy man, and started playing jokes and making fun of his team mates in the Toyota Centre. It was supposedly a rest day the day after the Rockets returned from Atlanta. Carl Landry, who was also there in Toyota Centre working out on his rehabilitation, was summoned to take telephone enquiries for those seasonal ticket holders on the 2nd floor. Carl Landry was unwilling and started mumbling: “Hey, give me a break. It’s supposed to be a rest day. Why can’t they let me rest?”

Yao Ming started to chuckle and said to Carl Landry: “Hey, don’t complain. You guys’ rest days had all been used up by me. Just go upstairs and do what you have been asked.”

We are so lucky to have this guy on our team, he sets a GREAT example for our young players.

If we don't win it this year, this team will be the team to beat NEXT year with Yao for sure.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that the team was 16-0 with Yao before he got injured, the only loss was to Utah, and Yao missed that game with the flu....

16-0 is pretty darned good too....

And I am rooting for 3 teams in the Olympics this year.

They look like 50-lb dumbells, but just a guess. (10 plates per dumbell x 5-lb(?) plates)

I think you're right. A 50 pounder is a lot thinner (isn't it?).

Yao's spirit of being quiet and working hard have rubbed off on this team. If there was ever a blue-collar team, this is it. I am proud to have Yao as a member of the Houston Rockets.

If Yao were to come back for the NBA Finals, this city would literally go crazy. Explode. Go bananas. It would be unreal. Let's get there and give him the chance.

It would be great, if at all feasible, to play Yao for 5 - 10 minutes, unannounced before the home court game in the Final. Imagine what fans and the players would react to that.

Does Yao have to have another surgery to take out the screws when they think his bones are heal are is it permanent?

no. especially if they had used Headless screws. If not, depends on the placement of the screw in relationship to the position f the fracture. but in 90% of cases no he does not.

BTW hey kep writing ankle. Navicular is NOT in the ankle. it's in the foot.
