I spoke to Yao's mom today during lunch and she stated that she wanted Yao back before January 29th. Get your tickets for the Rockets vs Heat on the 29th!!! She will feed him lots of chicken dumplings to speed up the recovery process. She does not want the injury to follow him into the new year. Bad luck that's what she told me.

Is Yao's mom a doctor? It doesn't matter that she wants him back. Only when Yao is cleared by the team doctors will he come back.

I don't expect to see Yao back by January 29th at all.

I wish I were wrong but sometimes, the laws of nature will trump what mama Yao has to say, chicken dumplings or not.

BTW, given the misleading nature of the title, I have to say:

    In before the lock.

So, Yao mama will get Yao back by the Chinese New Year by feeding him chicken dumplings? My back has been hurt for over two years, I guess I need some chicken dumplings to heal it.

Anyway, not doubting you, but it just sounds funny.

From what I remember, Yao's diagnosis was 6 weeks. He went down on December 18. January 29 is exactly 6 weeks to the date.

Yao: Coach, Mama said I'll play before the Chinese New Year or we'll have bad luck.
JVG: What did Keith say about your toe?
Yao: Doesn't matter what Mr. Jones said. If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody's happy. And she's feeding me chicken dumplings. I'll be ready for Shaq.
JVG: Tell your Mama feed the whole team chicken dumplings. My job depends on them.

I don't know whether I should believe this or not. Anyway, I don't think it's a good idea to rush back from an injury because of a superstituous reason.

Take the time to have the toe fully healed, Yao.

Even if they are extremely superstitious, but if Yao's not completely healed by that time, and they rush him on the court based on superstition, that's going to affect Yao's career. I doubt they take superstition over his health. I do hope Yao comes back healthy for that game though.

so he could be playing slightly hurt? I dunno, i'd take a 80% yao as long as he's not in danger or reinjuring that toe, is it possible...since it's an infection rather than say a muscle pull, bone break? I dunno, i'll hope for yao.

Wouldn't want Shaq to step on that toe. Yowza. That would be bad luck.

Vice versa! In the Allstar game, they should have Yao and Shaq get into a 1on1 toe-stepping contest. That would draw billions of viewers world wide!!!

Yao's mom better stick with the kitchen.

This isn't a situation where he might heal up faster. Tom Clanton (my former boss and Yao's surgeon) already told the Chronicle that the six (to eight) weeks is how long it will be before he's allowed on the court to practice, not how long before he might be activated. He's probably stationary bike only until then - no weight loading on the toe. Yao is most likely out until the ASG.
