I believe that most people on the board agree that Yao Ming is the best center in the league and he's been the best center in all of the playoff games that we've played since he was on our team. However, we've yet to pass the first round. If you had to build your team around any one position what would it be and why?

Teams are built around players - not positions.

I went with SG although I feel SG/SF are interchangeable.

hehe, nice. However, those players still play a position.

Coming from the Hakeem era I've always believed that the Center was the most important but now I'm not sure. Has this league changed?

Seconded. A dominant wing scorer is the best asset a team can have in today's game. It can be a SG or a SF. That would be my starting point but you need a lot more than just that to be a championship-caliber team. You need a good big, good role players, a balance of youth and experience, good coaching, etc...

nope, all the superstar players now are the perimeter guys mostly (kobe, lebron, wade, paul).

u put a prime hakeem, shaq, ewing, david robinson, they would still be dominant.

So are you saying the problem isn't that the center is no longer the number one position but instead that the talent level of today's centers has declined?

    If you have:

Lebron/Paul Pierce, you build around SF.
    Kobe/D-Wade, you build around SG.
    CP3/D-Wil, you build around PG.
    Yao/DH, you build around C.
    Duncan/Nowitzki, you build around PF.

If you have none of those:

    You build around Lottery.

Personally, I like combo guards like Wade. A player that can score when he needs to or pass when he needs to.

Maybe this will help you then. You have a mediocer team, no stars, and you have the number one pick in the draft. Of all the players that you listed, let's say they are all 20 years old and just finished their first year in college with great numbers. Who do you draft??

Point guard because he is the engine of the ship. I will admit that if a Hakeem walked through the door I would prefer him to any PG perhaps even Magic, but a top notch PG who happens to be an elite or near elite defender can make things so much easier for the team as a whole.

If all the exiting players on your team is average, always get the big man.
