Since we seem to be on the topic...

How long is Yao committed to playing in China and how long does he need to pony up the money to China?

Yao doesn't have to play for China, he wants to. I imagine he's 'committed' in that sense for as long as his body holds up. As for the money, I thought that it was all money he earned from a foreign league, forever (or until the law is repealed). I wouldn't worry about it; it's not like you were going to get a cut anyway.

Yao Ming does what his mind tells him is the right thing to do. American Minds work differently and have different ideals. Not to say either is right or wrong!

Yao Ming doesn't even play for the CBA anymore, he has no commitments to them. He's commited to the Chinese NT.

    Get it right.

The sad thing is that Cho is right... It is not about how much money Yao has to give back to China sports authorities, but the time commitment he has to make. Do you think Yao want to play against all those scrubs in the summer, instead of taking a break get a good rest so he can be 100% rested and healthy for next season? In my opinion, China wants to win Asian games badly to avenge loss against Korea last year, but China basketball association deserve to lose because all the bad things they did to Wang Zhizhi, Xue Yuyang, and Yao Ming. Cho is right, they have no long term vision. To win Asian games China don't even need Yao Ming, Bateer and Wang Zhizhi, they can do it with other players. But the sports authorities are notorious for bad management.

yao said playing for his country is an honor for him. i don't think that there's anything wrong with that. did anybody notice how NBA all-stars lined up to play for Team USA after the sad showing they put up this last time around in the World Championship of Basketball? sure, there's a difference between playing with the best players in the world and playing for the Chinese national team but that's besides the point.

Ask what can you do for the country before what the country can do for you.

Yao is a son of China. You can bet your money on it.
