Funny article. Basically some fans told Yao that he dunked too much to embarrassed the Japanese team. Yao said he was pissed off by their dirty tricks and soon enough he just started dunking on everybody. Funny stuff. http://sports.sina.com.cn/k/2003-09-29/1416602294.shtml
The babel fish feature at altavista (babelfish.altavista.com) gives a really interesting translation. Can someone who actually speaks the language translate, please?
... Yao Ming:"I didnt want to treat them that way when the game first started, but when they started grabbing me and scratching me , it just pissed me off. From then on , I just dropped those techinical moves like fade away jumper, every time I got the ball , I just throwed it down on their heads" ... Yao Ming jumped high up with 2 Japanese players hanging on him and made the 7th dunk, but he was fauled first so it doesnt count. ... After the game when he calmed down , Yao Ming admitted:"This is not right, this is not my style. Although it feels great , I shouldn't have done that and left my teammates standing there and watching , we should move the ball better" ...
What a class act! A great player, a great teammate, a great asset for the Rockets and most importantly a great person!
NOOOO !!!! THAT IS HOW HE SHOULD PLAY...EVERY FRICKEN GAME !!! If he wants to be a star that is.... DD
Holy crap... when his 2nd NBA season starts and if it's still not his 'style' to dunk on opponents, someone seriously needs to smack some sense into him. But get a ladder first. Or better still, scratch some sense into him.
China scored less than 100 points against Japan, the first time it fell below 100 points in the tournament. Yao shouldn't think that his dunking has anything to do with it. He needs to dominate as much as possible, even the Chinese assistant coach said he enjoys Yao's dominance, which IMO means the fans shouldn't worry about Yao getting emotional and "forget" to involve teammates. That's a load of crap! Now Yao get your a$$ over in America and learn from Ewing and JVG. Stop listening to those stupid fans.
It's not like Yao doesn't like dunking. It's that he thought he got too emotional, dunked too much, ignored his teammates, and resulted in low scoring. So I wouldn't worry about it, it's a type of thinking that can easily be corrected.
He definitely was more aggressive according to the few pictures we had. I definitely play stronger when I'm angry and emotional as well as I'm sure when he's being aggressive he would probably be almost unstoppable. I can understand what he means when he says that but sometimes you just GOTTA THROW IT DOWN BIG MAN!
I don't know about you guys, but I am quite happy when I read this article. First we know he can get mad , and then we know that he enjoys it . So he says sth about sticking to a plan , big deal , when he comes back , we just tell him the plan is to dunk as much as possible. Now close your eyes, and picture that 7th dunk in your mind, you'll feel better.
If those Japanese gnats pissed him off when hanging all over him, I hope he gets livid when people do it in the NBA this year.
Why would you want to change Yao Ming's selflessness? Do you want him to consern himself with selfish personal accolades and be consumed by his numbers such as Francis?
If Francis can get dunks everytime he drives to the basket I'll want him to be selfish all the way. Forget about teammates and selflessness when Yao can get a dunk. All offense should be geared towards getting the highest percentage shot, a dunk.
Last season Yao got a technical for "taunting" Theo Ratliff - I say, more technicals, and more taunting!
If he can get a dunk, great. But he should not neglect his teammates in the process. But that is already a moot point because for one he is too great a player, teammate and person for this to happen and two I know that he won't.
