I noticed it for the first time today and don't know if it's been remarked upon. i think they slap hands or pound fists or something but then go into a bow like ninjas do before they duel. that's one cool handshake! meanwhile, did anyone catch the MoT / Charles Barkley comparison by the announcer. that was funny.
i thought i was the only one who caught that. it lasted all of half a second or so before yao walked onto the court for tip-off. definitely the coolest handshake manuever (sp?)... ever.
Isnt that basically a show of respect for each other? I find it very interesting to see the few times we get to see Yao interact wiht his teammates..you can tell they are becoming real tight. Him and SF and Cat are always hugging and slapping each other's hands..and rubbing their heads..he and Mo have their ritual bowing...there was one point at the TWolves game where Yao was on the bench,and was right behind Ewing..he reached over and grabbed Ewing by the shoulders from behind and shook him a little and then they said somehting to each other and laughed.. Looks like he is having a lot of fun with them.
Yeah, I went back to my PVR and saw it at the game start. MoT was especially goofy. He looked so serious when he bowed. LOL
I actually don't really like it because I associate Americans imitating Chinese gestures with mockery. But I know Mo T and Yao are just doing their thing, so it's cool.
I saw it, it was very cool. In fact that is something I noticed when I sat behind the Rockets bench in the Atlanta game (check the link in my signature). I never noticed before their pre-game handshakes that each player does with each other. Very interesting.
I don't get to watch many Rockets games but they flashed this during a Rockets highlight package before one of the nationally televised games.
Are you serious? Wow....I guess you're entitled to your opinion. I would say lighten up, but I don't want to be rude.
If it looked like he was mocking it in the least...I might agree.. but if you watch them...they are both very serious when doing it. I really think it is a sign of respect between them. and obviously Yao doesnt have a problem with it....so we shouldnt either.
The Rox must have chosen to learn this greeting out of respect for Yao's culture. It looks very cool to me. Who knows, may be one day it's as common as high-five which wasn't originated by the white people either (correct me if I'm wrong). A new greeting based on black-white-Asian culture coming out of Houston, and widely used, would definitely be wonderful.
well hopefully they don't go too far one day and smack their heads together. they should adopt the Mike Hampton-Jose Lima kissing greeting
It's just a pregame ritual. They all have their little handshakes. The kissing greeting would be cool. Edit - I'm one away from my evil post.
