Top five shooting guards in Houston Rockets history

By William Menna, Yahoo! Contributor Network 56 minutes ago

Qualifiers: the Houston Rockets have more than 40 years of history, so players should have at least two seasons with the team. Also, players will be classified under one position even if they played at more than one. For example, while Clyde Drexler played both shooting guard and small forward, he will only appear on one list.

    Clyde Drexler:

Hall of Fame swingman Clyde Drexler finished his career on a high with four great years with the Houston Rockets from 1995 to 1998. After setting the standard for greatness in the Portland Trail Blazers organization, Drexler came to Houston in 1995 and helped the sixth-seeded Rockets win an improbable second consecutive NBA championship. He averaged 19.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.9 steals in 219 games with the Rockets. The ten-time All-Star totaled 22,195 points, 6,677 rebounds, 6,125 assists and 2,207 steals over 15 NBA seasons.

    Mike Newlin:

Mike Newlin was the Rockets' shooting guard for eight seasons in the 1970s. A fan favorite in Houston, Newlin was a great shooter for the Rockets during their early years in Houston. "The Shark" averaged 14.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists over 604 games with the Rockets. He scored 8,480 points with the Rockets and 12,507 in his 11-year career.

    Cuttino Mobley:

High-scoring shooting guard Cuttino Mobley was one of the best three-point shooters of the last decade. Mobley was a great find as a second round pick in the 1998 draft. He became a starter as a rookie and gave the Rockets one of the best pure shooters in the game for six seasons through 2004. He averaged 17.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists overall including a career best 21.7 points per game in 2001-02. Mobley retired in 2008 with 11,964 points and 1,085 three-pointers.

    Vernon Maxwell:

Talented, but unstable shooting guard Vernon Maxwell spent the first-half of the 1990s as a starter for the Houston Rockets. Maxwell averaged 14.9 points, 4.3 assists and 1.4 steals in 402 games with the Rockets. He was a major contributor to the Rockets' 1994 NBA Championship and he won a ring with the team in 1995 as well, despite becoming a non-factor following the Drexler acquisition. Maxwell owns the Rockets' franchise record for three-point baskets with 730.

    Mario Elie:

Mario Elie was a great defensive swingman for the Rockets in the mid-1990s. Elie was mostly a backup and a role player, but he was a hero for the Rockets in the 1995 playoffs. He averaged 9.8 points and 3.1 assists over five seasons, winning two championships with the Rockets in 1994 and 1995 and a third with the San Antonio Spurs in 1999.

Mcgrady is arguably the best/2nd best ever. K-mart is better than half the players listed.

Jermaine Taylor actually is quite a player. If you asking for troubles, Richie Frahm was a big player. The only guy that can win a battle for a Clyde's starting job in rockets all-time roster,

He was an Adam Morrison before the league actually saw Adam Morrison

McGrady is not "arguably the best" at all. Martin didn't play 2 seasons, so he wasn't eligible.

I'm not sure it's possible to deny someone from being "arguably" anything. Good on you for trying, however.

Tracy McGrady is not only the best shooting guard to ever play for the Rockets, he is the best shooting guard to ever lace them up, period.

I'm pretty sure you are arguably a moron for making that statement. That is undeniable. ;)
