NBA reinstates suspended referee Joey Crawford

    September 17, 2007

NEW YORK (TICKER) -- The NBA on Monday reinstated referee Joey Crawford, who had been suspended indefinitely by the league this past spring.

Monday's announcement came exactly five months after Crawford was suspended for his "improper conduct and lack of professionalism" during a game between the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks on April 15.

In the contest, Crawford assessed two technical fouls on Spurs superstar center Tim Duncan during a 76-second span of the third quarter.

NBA commissioner David Stern lowered the boom on Crawford two days later, suspending the 31-year veteran for the remainder of the season - including the NBA Playoffs and Finals.

However, Stern said in a statement Monday that Crawford is ready to return to the game.

"Based on my meeting with Joey Crawford, his commitment to an ongoing counseling program and a favorable professional evaluation that was performed at my direction, I am satisfied that Joey understands the standards of game management and professionalism the NBA expects from him and that he will be able to conduct himself in accordance with those standards," Stern said.

During his stellar career, Crawford's 266 playoff and 38 Finals games are the most among active officials. He also is one five officials to have worked at least 2,000 regular-season games.

What he did to Duncan was a joke. I'm surprised that he's back in after this summer's ref scandal. I would think that Stern would be showing less compassion to these refs that break the rules.

    Oh well.

    Hmmmmmmm...

Not quite sure how I feel about this, but I guess he deserves a second chance. It's not like he was giving out inside info like some refs...

He's a good referee. Better than Bavetta.

a very poor decision by the godfather.

crawford is an arrogant azzhole who doesn't deserve a second chance.

anyone who has watched a rocket's game on floor level will witness how abusive crawford is toward players, coaches, gene peterson, worrell, and the score keeper.

2nd chance? THIS WAS HIS 2nd CHANCE. By reinstating him, Stren is giving him a 3rd chance.

I had respect for Crawford but I didn't realize he had a history of doing crap like this.

Tossing Duncan wasn't that big a deal.

Amen to that. I mean, Crawford is hot headed, but he's hot-headed towards everybody. He calls the fairest game of anybody.

Bavetta, on the other hand, was probably heading up the betting operation. I'll be dancing in the streets the day he's out of the league.

I feel that Joe Crawford makes the least mistakes when officiating. Compared to the other whistle-blowing fools, I'm glad Crawford is coming back.

well said. and he is one of the few referees who will confer with the other refs to make sure they agree with a disputable call.

He's a good ref that deserves a second chance.

Let's not kid ourselves here, if we were refs we would all hate Duncan too. All he does is cry, pester you and complain the whole time. He's never committed a foul in his life, right?

We've all seen his "WHAAAT?!?!" and "NOOOOO" faces accompanied by this...

i have no problem with crawford getting another chance as long as he learned to pay attention to what's happening on the court and not worrying about what's going on at the bench. paranoia has no place in officiating.

duncan has to ease up on the politicking for calls, but he should be able to laugh on the bench without getting a T.

I'm all for giving the guy another chance, I guess. As long as he's willing to work on improving, and is not too stuck in his ways. I wonder if this could turn into a scenario similar to Barkley and Mathis from way back when.
