Please god I hope this is not true.

    By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

In a dramatic move that would resuscitate their fading championship hopes, the Boston Celtics are discussing a deal with the Washington Wizards for forwards Antawn Jamison(notes) and Caron Butler(notes), league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Friday.

The proposed deal would send the expiring contracts of Ray Allen(notes), Brian Scalabrine(notes) and J.R. Giddens(notes) to the Wizards, a move that would signal the start of Washington’s rebuilding process.

The trade isn’t imminent, but talks have progressed and Celtics GM Danny Ainge has positioned his organization to make one of the boldest trade deadline moves in years. For the Celtics, ownership would have to agree to take on an additional $24 million in salary next season between Jamison and Butler. Jamison makes more than $15 million in 2011-12, but most owners are discounting those salaries because of an assumption that there will be a labor lockout and some, if not all, of that money will never be paid to the players.

Sources expected the two teams to talk further Friday and throughout the weekend in Dallas.

Both Boston and Washington still have discussions with several teams in the works, including a potential Wizards-Mavericks deal that league sources insisted was discussed well into Thursday night in Dallas.

Washington has offered Butler and DeShawn Stevenson(notes) for the Mavericks’ Josh Howard(notes) and a small expiring contract. There were strong signals on late Thursday that deal was getting close, but one source with knowledge of the talks said that Mavs owner Mark Cuban wasn’t prepared to commit to the move and wanted to keep shopping.

For now, that hesitancy leaves open the possibility of Boston’s aging core regaining its footing as a championship contender. Sources insist that Boston’s ownership is in an aggressive mode and determined to back Ainge in his desire to get younger and more athletic without sacrificing the short term for the long term. Boston desperately needs quickness on its frontline, and Jamison, a 6-foot-9 forward, and Butler, a 6-7 swingman, are players with All-Star pedigrees. With the unstable knee of Kevin Garnett(notes) and shoddy play of Rasheed Wallace(notes), this move could potentially give the Celtics the ability to fortify its frontcourt with two of the most desired players on the trade market.

Boston has swooned to fourth in the Eastern Conference, stumbling into the All-Star break with turmoil surrounding the team. The Celtics are 32-18, and just four games ahead of the surging Toronto Raptors in the Atlantic Division.

The possibility of Boston prying Jamison out of Washington has to be unsettling to the Cleveland Cavaliers. GM Danny Ferry has coveted Jamison for two years, and has made him his No. 1 priority at the trade deadline. The Cavaliers have several contingency plans for losing out on Jamison – topped with Indiana’s Troy Murphy(notes) – but losing Jamison to conference rival Boston would be particularly piercing for the Cavs.

Washington is still part of a lingering, but stalled three-team discussion with New York and Houston that would send Tracy McGrady(notes) to the Knicks, Al Harrington(notes) and Larry Hughes(notes) to the Wizards and Caron Butler and possibly Mike Miller(notes) to the Houston Rockets.

I'm clearly not god nor a god but you may call me Mr xiki. Let's see, Butler and Jamison to C's; so, Pierce 'slides' down to the 2 and KG to the bench?

What does Washington get out of this going forward? Well, they may hand their Division rivals a leg up for the next three years or so.

We are in the Twilight Zone's Disinformation Zone. Enjoy the ride!

If the whole issue was over expiring contracts, why wouldn't they just trade with Houston for those two players? Tmac seems like a far more attractive option than the corpse of Ray Allen + Scalabrine & Giddens....at least Tmac can still sell you some tickets. I would be shocked it Boston pulled that off....doesn't seem very likely to me - nevermind the fact that Butler plays the same position as Pierce and Jamison the same as Garnett & Wallace.

Remember Morey said the teams were right on the last report but not the details? Now we have TMac for Butler + Miller.

    Damn it.

I personally was pretty high on bringing in 7ft, 4th in league for blocks, Brandon Haywood. Maybe even more so than Caron.

Miller is a GREAT player for this team/system. He fits as 4th option/6th man of a contender. The problem is:

Butler - Miller - Budinger -Taylor
    Ariza - Battier
    ...

What league have YOU been watching the past year and a half? Ray Allen is a MUCH better option for Washington right now than McGrady. Also, Houston isn't willing to take on Jamison's salary, so there really isn't much of a comparison to make.

As an aside, I also think the Butler/Stevenson for Howard trade with Dallas makes much more sense for the Wizards (hence, them proposing it and Cuban still mulling it over).

Bottom line: The Rockets will need to throw in either Budinger or their (lottery-protected) first rounder if they want Caron Butler.

OK this will sound crazy at first but follow me here and then destroy me.

I say if Washington moves on this Boston deal then is obvious they are blowing up the whole thing so I say we come back to them and discuss this deal....

Rox get Miller, Blatche, Stevenson and James

    for

    TMAC/Dorsey and/or #2

Washington eliminates two more contracts, roughly just under 7 million for next season, while not effecting their LT level.

Miller probably fits the Rox a lot better with his 3 point stroke then Butler although not the play maker Butler is, Blatche is the young big man the Rox are looking for and Stevenson will become the new Brian Cook which means he will be traded at next years deadline for peanuts. We would have ability to pay Miller in the off season and would fit with Yao a lot better then Butler while helping out the shooting problems out this years squad. This is a move for next year and beyond not something for this season but it could be a promising move if the big guns can't be acquired.

There's no way this is legit. Washington is getting 0 talent back in return for losing their two top stars. Even if first round picks were added, they would be late 20s picks -- not exactly a coveted asset.

Think about it. Washington wanted Hickson in return for exchanging Jamison for an expiring contract. Is JR Giddens on the same level as Hickson? Hardly. And Butler is expiring next year - hardly a "bad" contract.

Hell, the Rockets could send McGrady+Budinger and top Boston's offer. The two teams may have discussed something, but there certainly has to be more players than this involved. Maybe if Glen Davis is involved it would make more sense, but the proposed trade makes zero sense for Washington.

It's a straight salary dump - not gonna happen.

That Celtic team needs a boost. They're on their last leg. Pierce is hobbled, KG is hobbled, Allen is aging and older. Makes sense for them.

Sounds like some didn't read the story! Makes much sense for them

    *When healthy

    Rondo
    Butler
    Pierce
    Garnett
    Perkins

    *Hobbled, hurt, etc.

    Rondo/House
    Daniels/Allen/House
    Butler
    Jamison
    Perkins

    TMac(23mil) for Butler(9.7mil) + Miller(9.7mil) even works salary wise.

The question is whether New York can offer Wizard enough expiring contract + young talent/picks + money to make the other side of the deal work.

If they are blowing it up to start over- They will most likely hold on to Blatche.

Start new teams around young talent.
