If any of you are Yahoo users - visit the groups, use email, etc - you'll want to check this. Yahoo created an entire new section of each user account called "subscriptions" that controls advertising lists - i.e. spam. Here's what "great" about it. They set every default option for receiving email crap to YES. So, if you don't change them, you'll start getting a box full of junk - well, more than you already do. Here's the link to get to it. Just login and the "marketing" page comes right up. http://subscribe.yahoo.com/showaccount
whoa. thanks jeff. how pathetic on yahoos part. dont they realize the worst way to get news and info across via email is to NOT send unwanted junk mail to people who dont want it. all you get is alot of trashed email and upset users.
Ah, how lovely... I love when companies default to spam like that. RealNetworks does a similar thing when you install their player. They actually hide theirs, though. You have to scroll down beyond the visible portion of a tiny window to actually see that they are subscribing you to their brand of e-garbage. Yet another reason to never post your private email address when signing up for anything... I usually use "email@email.com" or in the case of having to use a valid address for password purposes, a garbage Hotmail account. Good link. x34
Thanks so much for that link. I was wondering why I was getting more and more spam. The worst thing is that they were also using the e-mail account I used to sign up for some Yahoo services (where they send a confirmation e-mail to!!!). I never understood that I started getting spam there since I never gave it out elsewhere!!!!!
I hate the fact that Yahoo is taking away the free POP3 service. I've used Yahoo mail as a filter for spam for a while now and it absolutely rocks. Now I have to pay for POP3 access... arrrggg...
Oh great... now I find out my onebox account is going to start charging for their "free email". Time to change my email account I suppose...
Give it a little more time, and all of them will be charging. The "free" heyday of the Internet is over... x34
ALSO, When you switch all the Spam preferences "NO" it stops delivering to your POP/Outlook...until you start paying.
AOL did the same exact thing a couple of years ago. Doesn't surprise me that Yahoo is doing it too, but it does surprise me in that they are just now getting around to doing it. A shame it all is, really.
I think the only "good stuff" about hotmail is the fact that it can integrate with Outlook Express. Otherwise, it too is a haven for spam...
You've got to be kidding. Hotmail is probably the worst free email service on the planet... I joined one fantasy league and promptly received so many garbage spam emails, I don't even look at the account anymore. And it doesn't allow you the freebie POP3 access, either... Oh well.
From CNET.com: http://news.com.com/2100-1023-871730.html It still comes down to this (with ALL these services) you get what you pay for... x34
Well I created a hotmail account a couple months ago and I've yet to receive any spam mail, so maybe you guys should be more careful about which p*rn newsletters you sign up for instead of blame hotmail for them.
I created a hotmail account, never used it ANYWHERE and still got so much spam it is not even funny. Finally I set it to only allowing mails from my contact list (and since nobody knows the address, I don't get any mails there except from Microsoft - tried to block that, but that doesn't work ).
Me too. I've had a Hotmail account for a couple of years that I only use when forms require them for registration..nothing else. If you use the filters properly, you won't get a single piece of mail from anyone that you don't want to. x34
I've never had to use filters on Yahoo. And I've given that email out to hundreds of places. I rarely get spam. Maybe 1-5 unwanted emails a week. I gave my Hotmail account to about 3 fantasy basketball and football leagues and I'm deluged. Hmmm... maybe it's those leagues. I dunno.
