How can you become "unclinched" when you were "clinched?" Check it out, in Yahoo Sports NBA standings the Rockets are no longer "clinched" for the playoffs. After the Denver game, the Rockets got a "star." Today, no "star." The standings show that Utah and Denver are two games behind with two to go. What's up with this, is it just a mistake?

They clinched but why they did i don't know. If Rockets lose last two games and jazz and nuggetts win both games, all three teams would have same record. Nuggets have tiebraker with us because they have better conference record than us. Jazz have our tiebraker because they bet us 3-1.

Actually I think it might be true!!!!

What happens if Jazz and Den win out and Rox lose out (Jazz and Den go 2 -0 and Rox go 0 -2)?

Jazz, Den and Rox are all 44 - 38
We own the tie break over Den, Den owns tie break over Jazz, and Jazz own the tie break over Rox. So what happens in a 3 way tie with each team having tie break one and not over another? Any rules expert to clear this up?

I think the fact that the Rox have a worse conference record really really hurts. Which might be what decides who gets in.

I'm not worried just wondering why Rox clinched. If all three teams have the same record, all with tie breaker over another team, how do you decide which 2 goes to the playoffs?

We don't have tiebreaker against the nuggets, they have better winning % in conference because are season series was tied 2-2. This guy maybe true.

We won the series 3 - 1 against the Nugs.

    Apr 9 vs Denver W 106-103

    Apr 2 at Denver L 100-110

    Oct 30 vs Denver W 102-85

    Oct 22 vs Denver W 102-79

But Jazz have tie break over us, but Den has tie break over Utah. I'm still wondering if all 3 team have same record, who gets in?

Oct.22 was a preseason game. Dec.26 was the game you forgot and we lost 95-96. So it 2-2.

I know the standings and all, but I just don't know why Rox clinched since all three team can have the same record and the other two have better records in conference and we own tie break over only one of thme.

    Wizkid,
Oct 22 was a preseason game.
We lost to Denver Dec. 26 95-94.
Season series = 2-2 with Denver having the better conference record.

This topic has been discussed ad nauseum. In the event of a 3 team tie, the tiebreaker is winning percentage among the 3 teams. This breaks the tie between all three teams. Conference record is only used in the event any teams are tied after the head to head comparisons.

    Denver/Utah/Houston Interteam Records:
    Denver - 5-3
    Houston - 4-4
    Utah - 3-4

Therefore, in a three team tie, we finish ahead of Utah but behind Denver. Since none of the teams are tied, we don't need to use conference records.
