It's good to see, but I don't know where the confidence is coming from. It's been a bloodbath at my office today. Four of my office neighbors have been laid off.

THROW MONEY AT EVERYTHING!!! HOOOOORAAAAAAAY!!!!! WE ARE SAVED!!!!!

but seriously i'd like to see opinion polls overlayed with the chart of the stock market. it will be funny how people's opinions change when this low volume rally starts to pull back and we watch money begin to evaporate again.

i don't either. blinded by a charming personality and smile. We hve become a country of suckers.

I'm terrified of the countries direction, mostly due to outrageous spending and govt intervention with the promise of more govt programs

It's a historic time in our country...and that's not a good 'historic' either

the economy is bad but it doesn't necessarily mean its obama's fault or he hasn't been doing anything to fix it..

I know you like to take every thread as an opportunity to complain about government spending but I doubt that's why people are optomistic.

no one's saying yay, obama threw a bunch of money at wall street

yes this is true but that doesn't mean things are getting better. much of the data continues to show they are getting worse. further how will the economy hold up after GM goes bankrupt? what will the ripple effects of that be even if the govt attempts a "surgical' bankruptcy? what about the continually weakening commercial real estate market? how exactly is the consumer supposed to prop up our economy anymore? people are acting as if things have fundamentally changed in the past 6 weeks as the market as rallied. we based our economic expansion on the expansion of the american consumer and that isn't coming back.

well i do believe that people are more optimistic because the market has been rallying. back when it was still crashing obama opinion polls weren't trending very well.

yes the decline in the economy has slowed down some but nothing has fundamentally changed other than money being thrown at the problem. further, i am not saying i completely disagree with money being thrown at things since we are attempting to avoid a deflationary depression and trying to buy some time hoping to figure something out but we aren't exactly throwing money at things in a responsible fashion. This is great news if you feel the strength of our country relies on popularity contests.

I think the optimism and confidence comes from a couple of different places.

    1. Obama can communicate. He was a professor. He knows how to get up in front of people and explain his plans. He states the problems, and lays out what needs to be done, and what he intends to do. It has been a long time since we've had a president who can communicate in that way.

    2. Leadership. Obama has taken steps to try and fix the problem. When there were problems with some of the fixes, Obama has acknowledged them, and tried to correct those as well. It's been a long time since we've had a President who acknowledged mistakes and was willing to take steps to rectify them. They see Obama actually taking action, and explaining what he's doing, and what the problems are.

    3. Leadership in other areas. He's moved swiftly to eliminate things like torture, and put in plans to get rid of Gitmo, and other shameful incidents of our nation's very recent past. They see that he really is about change, and it bleeds over to their support in the economic field as well.

People may disagree with his policies, and steps he's taken to stimulate the economy, but there is little doubt that he has taken action, and that he's gone out in public to speak about what he's doing.

I don't really question the Obama approval rating. He's a great personality, and he's certainly trying. I question the direction of the country. I'm the eternal optimist, and I see few signs of it not getting worse before it gets better.

Interesting. Whenever I read news on Yahoo! about Obama it is of a negative mindset.
