McGrady concerned about All-Star game in New Orleans
    February 28, 2007

HOUSTON (AP) -- Houston Rockets star Tracy McGrady said Wednesday he would consider skipping next year's All-Star game if he felt he wouldn't be safe in New Orleans.

"When they first mentioned to me that the All-Star game was going to be in New Orleans, the first thing I thought about is how much security they are going to have for the players and everybody there," McGrady said.

"I don't think it's the right city to have this type of event right now. I know the city is in need of trying to get back on their feet, in need of money. Safety comes first. I'm sure they have to do a lot of research and look into before they really make this decision."

The security issue became a larger concern after there were hundreds of arrests in Las Vegas during All-Star weekend.

"If I don't feel that I'm going to be safe, if I am on that team, I will look into probably not even going," McGrady said.

McGrady's comments came two days after union director Billy Hunter raised his concerns over New Orleans' ability to host the weekend's events, telling Newsday that, "If the union is not convinced that the city can accommodate the All-Star game, it's an issue that will be subject to litigation between the union and the league."

However, Hunter said he was just speaking hypothetically, and both he and NBA commissioner David Stern said they expect next year's weekend to be successful.

I'm sure he's not the only player who feels this way, and wouldn't be surprised if others make similar comments over the next few weeks.

Based on Tracy's words, Billy Hunter's comments and common sense, obviously this is a big issue with the union. If I were Tracy, I wouldn't want to be the first player to make these comments publicly.

I was in Las Vegas for the all star game. I don't blame T-Mac at all.

I go to Vegas every month. I don't feel safer anywhere else in the world that in Vegas in a hotel on the strip or some of the other properties like Palms and Hard Rock which are off the strip.

There were multiple shooting, stabbings, and deaths, one of them a drive-by in the Caesar's Palace main valet.

At one point during the weekend, I was in a Hard Rock escalade trying to turn left from the strip onto Harmon St. The "fans" were walking across the street when the sign had the red hand signalling to stop. There was a line of 10 cars behind us, and the light turned green so we were blocking the whole strip. The driver kept inching forward and the "fans" were banging on the car, giving dirty looks, and one guy grabbed his hip to signify he had a gun.

I will never, ever be anywhere remotely near the All Star Game. It justs brings out the ghetto, and with New Orleans averaging a murder of day and a half in a city of only 200,000 people, it doesn't need any more ghetto than it already has.

Man, why did McGrady make these comments... It is just bad public relations. New Orleans is rebuilding, an NBA all star game brings much needed hope. Of course there will be security. These are the kind of comments that infuriate Stern.

I would be more afraid for Yao. He'll probably stick out alot more on the street than Tracy.

I will have to speak from experience here in Downtown Houston when the All Star game was going on. It was really bad, we didn't have the people we thought we would have. We thought it would be a mini superbowl but it was just the opposite. Just a bunch of trouble here in downtown. No one wanted to come into venues (not like i wanted most of the crowd to) but they just stood in the parking lots and streets drinking and causing nothing but fights and stuff. It was definitley not a good crowd at all. Very ghetto crowd in my opinion and in all aspects it showed during the All Star game.

If I recall, T-Mac pulled out of the Olympics in 2004 or maybe it was the world championships the year before and said prett much the exact same thing and went on to say he was building a house and didn't want to go....anyone else recall that? Not that I blame him, I'm not sure NO is ready for it

Ok....I witnessed this conversation and these comments were taken totally out of context. No one is going to skip the All Star game for safety reasons...and oh by the way New Orleans will be 10 times better than Vegas because the great people of Los Angeles won't be making the 36 hour drive....New Orleans hosts Mardi Gras every year...I think they can handle the All Star game...

New Orleans is a sink of crime...and has always been a sinkhole of crime. The jazz musicians ought to get together and just blow "Taps" over it.

"JUst shows the difference in mindsets between the players and I...I'm worried about winning right now and this t-mac guy, is concerned about a game,a year away." I'm paraphrasing JVG's reaction
