ORLANDO, Fla. - Orlando Magic forward Pat Garrity is retiring from the NBA.

Garrity played 10 pro seasons — nine with the Magic — after spending his rookie year with the Phoenix Suns. He appeared in 513 games for Orlando, second most in franchise history.

The 32-year-old player from Notre Dame was a free agent after last season.

Garrity averaged 7.3 points in 20 minutes a game. He led Orlando in 3-point shooting from 1999 to 2003.

he should have just not come to work one day, why pull attention to his mediocrity by announcing a retirement like he was aN nba big shot. And by the way, this was one of TMAC soldiers back in Orlando, even Luther Head is better than this dude

I don't know what's more surprising.... the fact that he lasted 10 years in the NBA or how he averaged 7ppg for his career.

actually i think the fact that he made front page news is surprising. The NBA sports page must be lacking some news, where is Josh Howard and Chalmers to raise some mar1juana news when you need then

    you whats sad and terrible?

that last season when tracy was with orlando and they did terrible i remember watching a magic game and the announcer said that they wouldnt be too bad if they hadnt lost Pat Garrity for such a long stretch. i turned to my friend and said thats when you know you have a sh** team when you are relying on pat garrity to be your difference maker.

either way i guess its the slow news season for the nba

It's crazy, but a team with Tmac, Mike Miller, and Pat Garrity as the major pieces almost beat the Pistons in the playoffs a year before they won the title. They really did go downhill when he got hurt. Signing Juwan Howard and trading Miller for Drew Gooden certainly didn't help either.

Yahoo is on a roll today.....

Yet another groundbreaking NBA news on their front page!!!!!

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=afp-basketchnnbalakerssun&prov=afp&type=lgns

Don't call me Magic, call me Monkey King - China's Sun

BEIJING (AFP) - Los Angeles-bound guard Sun Yue has said he does not want to be known as "China's Magic Johnson" as he seeks a spot on the Laker's roster, but is happy to be known as the "Monkey King."

Sun is expected to depart for the Laker's training camp as soon as the US Embassy here issues his visa, and he is confident that he can make a roster that is led by superstars Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol.

"I don't want to be called the next Magic Johnson," Sun told the China Daily of the nickname given him to by the Chinese sporting press.

"He was a great player, and he has everything you could ask for in a coach but I don't think I am going to pattern my game after him in my rookie year," he said of the legendary player and Lakers part-owner.

The 23-year-old Sun was signed by Los Angeles to a multi-year contract after he helped China to an eighth place finish at the Beijing Olympics, averaging 6.8 points and 2.5 assists a game.

The six-foot-eight inch (2.06 metre) guard was originally selected by the Lakers in the second round of the 2007 NBA draft, but was not given a contract or an invitation to training camp last year.

Already Chinese fans in Los Angeles are calling him "Sun Wukong," after the mythical "Monkey King," the legendary simian hero of the Chinese Buddhist literary classic "Journey to the West."

"If they want to name me after the fighting Buddhist master then I guess that will make me a bit more literary," Sun told journalists.

"For the fans to already have these kinds of plans (to name me Monkey King) is really great support for me."

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

The bolded part is epic. If only Yinka Dare had come right out and said, "I don't want to be called the next Hakeem Olajuwon," things would have been so much easier for him.

It'd be nice if its to where he PREFERS being called Monkey, and as in Anthony Miller preferring to be called Pig.

In all seriousness, Garrity (aka Steve Stifler) was a lights out 3 point shooter.

You have to respect a guy that grafted a career for himself out of very limited natural ability and made himself stick by developing a sweet perimeter game.

that's inaccurate. in the original chinese quote, magic johnson reference was qualified by "chinese". but anyway, the real monkey king >> magic johnson! :D
