I know it's just patent application, but this stuff is a little on the "I can not even believe anyone thinks this is ok" side. Yahoo article "New DVR will use camera and microphone to target advertisements based on recordings of user" It's not hard to imagine this getting out of hand. What is it about stuff like this lately? When did privacy go out of style?
Very creepy, but consistent with the trend. Govt reading our emails without warrants, personalized search results, Facebook and social media selling our data, GPS tracking on phones to show area adverts, auto check-ins, and more, it's a very interesting era we're headed towards. I'm not a conspiracy lover so I'm just becoming more jaded about the idea of privacy, and what lengths corporations will go to get me to spend and spend.
False. Only government can be Big Brother. The free market always offers you choices, so you can get an old TV with rabbit ears, use a landline, and throw away your computer. You always have a choice with the free market. The free market is about LIBERTY and FREEDOM and JESUS.
thadeus nailed it (obligatory), but he's right. I believe there will always be an option to preserve your rights. It might not be as good as the creepy technology, but I'm sure demand create its existence. You have a choice to avoid facebook, choose a phone, etc. Only thing I can't argue about is email.
If this ever came to pass, I imagine it would be set up so you can save money on your cable bill by turning on this functionality.
Imagine . .. when IN THE SMALL PRINT OF YOUR CABLE AGREEMENT . . . it says YOU CANNOT TURN IT OFF!!! When Turning it off is like 'Jail Breaking' your iphone. . . .except more legally punishable You no longer OWN THE DEVICES . . you rent them. So you cannot TAMPER with them . . . . . . . I am sure it will be voluntary .. because it will cost 250$ for the full package without it . .and 50$ for the same package with it . . . and then people will say . . IF YOU WANT PRIVACY YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT IF you don't want them watching you . . .then don't get cable Why complain about something YOU AGREED TOO . . . . SMH Manipulation through pricing and lack of options . . . DID YOU REALLY THINK GETTING RID OF ANALOG OVER THE AIR TV was meant to do anything beyond FORCE YOU IN TO THE CABLE MARKET?>!??!?!?! Rocket River
RR-I c u What year was it that the government was handing out stimulus money or coupons or whatever it was that they did to upgrade people off analog? Does it coincide with these patents being filed?
Did not necessarily have too. This is not a quantum leap in technology. Hell . . cameras been in cells phones for ages DVRs are much bigger boxes. They don't use all that space Rocket River
the more control that corporations have over our government, it seems, the less real the choice(s) will become. Pricing and fine print are good examples to start, but there are other examples that are more subtle like the report that came out a while back that suggested anyone without a facebook account was not to be trusted.
Do you remember the Max Headroom TV show from the 80s? Part of the premise was that TVs had no off button.
. . and just because you turn off the set/box . . .does not mean the camera is off. Once this is in place . . . . I can imagine hearing this "Cops got a warrent to tap the suspects DVR box." "Comcast was subpena'd for the tapes from the suspect's DVR box." ".. . well . . .only two people were in the room . . so to see what happened we need those tapes" Who would argue against using this tech to solve crimes? Of course we will slippery slope into . . . . IF YOU DON'T HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE . . WHY WOULD THIS BOTHER YOU . . .realm Rocket River
If you know where they are . . . .and depends on the type of microphone Rocket River could be multiple cameras and microphones. . . once they have access they can do what they want
