This is the problem with drafting bigs for potential. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basket...sn-t-mean-Daniel-Orton-made-?urn=ncaab,253812
its one game, a summer league game at that oden had like what 9 fouls in his first game? i think he tried to do too much i am sure he'll settle down and find his niche i mean donte green had 40 points in his first summer league game and its not like he is filling up the stat sheets in the nba now... i would give the kid at least 2 seasons before declaring him a bust
agreed! You cant just judge a rookie by its first ever NBA GAME...even if its in the Summer League. All you can hope for when drafting rookies is that they show improvements from years 1-3. If we went according to first nba games, YAO wouldnt be what he is today... if you remember, his first game ever in the NBA against Indiana, he scored 0 points! Give the kid some time to grow.
Oden was the first pick in the '07 Draft and expected to be a franchise player. Orton was the 29th pick in this year's draft and he's playing behind Dwight Howard and Marcin Gortat so he'll get more time to learn the game while not expected to play much his first few NBA seasons.
i know its summer league, but i have always been tired of the league in its hype of big man potential (as is kevin pritchard)
This. There were still a couple centers left (Whiteside being one) that would have been a wiser pick. Plus, I wouldn't give the benefit of the doubt to anyone coming out of a Calipari program. If you have questions about the maturity and coaching in regards to one of his kids, it's probably not going to be good. Cousins should be a great example of that.
it's one game, give this guy a chance. summer league means little, Dorsey was a beast in summer league but can't catch on in the NBA. Remember Marco Bellinelli? He lit up the summer league and now he is a scrub.
When you offer up Whiteside as a contrast to the player you are calling immature, one sincerely hopes you are being ironic.
The best part about it was after Orton committed his third foul in 5 minutes and the announcers were talking about Stan Van Gundy just shaking his head and looking very animated. I wish they would have showed that. Also after the draft Van Gundy was interviewed and he said something along the lines of "Well...i didnt pick him."
Orton today went- 0-6 from field, 2-4 FT, 2 rebounds(one offensive), 1 assist, 1 block, one turnover and 2 fouls in 17 min.
The 29th pick in the NBA can't be classified as a bust regardless. If they hit it, then great for them, if they lose out, oh well, so do most 29th picks.
he had a bad day, not a big deal. if it stays like this consistently then there is something to worry about.
true, but usually one hopes that a first round pick as a chance to be an nba player. this kid was no where near the value of a first round pick. he should've been late second round or undrafted. but the nba loves "potential."
