Hornets sign Peterson to offer sheet
July 16, 2004

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Restricted free agent forward Morris Peterson signed an offer sheet with the New Orleans Hornets on Friday, giving the Toronto Raptors 15 days to match it.

The Hornets did not release the amount of the offer, citing club policy. Peterson's agent, Rob Pelinka, said the deal was worth $15 million over three years.

``I'm excited about the opportunity to play for New Orleans,'' Peterson said Friday night in an interview with The Associated Press. ``After Toronto didn't show a lot of loyalty, I feel like New Orleans is giving me a fresh start with a first-class organization.''

Peterson played in every game for the Raptors last season, starting 29, and averaged 8.3 points and 3.2 rebounds.

In the 2000 NBA draft, he was Toronto's first-round pick, 21st overall.

Uncertainty surrounds the small forward position in New Orleans heading into next season because 2003 All-Star Jamal Mashburn has a right knee injury that kept him out of all but 19 games last season. He sat out the playoffs last season, suggested the Hornets may have mishandled his injury and said the pain may force his premature retirement.

Chances are Toronto would match that offer. Considering all the WILD contracts flying around these days, 15M for 3 years is a bargin. What amazes me is the LENGTH! Role players shouldnt get anymore than 4 years and finally we see a role player get the right length (ahem Fisher, Cardinal, Alston etc). Imagine that, a contract that isnt inflated!

FYI, the Rocky Mountain News was also reporting that the Hornets were going to offer the Nuggets Chris Anderson an offer sheet too. But perhaps that was before they offered the money to Peterson.

Yeah, probably ending with the whole team going to some place if Carter gets traded. What metropolitan area in the East doesn't have a pro team that could use one?

Two of the larger population areas without teams are St Louis and Pittsburgh. Whether they would have enough to support a team is another question.

i hadn't heard anything about mopete to NO before, but this doesn't surprise me. mopete brings youth and is a gunner at the 3 spot. something they definitely need with mash being a non factor the last couple years.

Peterson has pretty much been a disappointment the last couple of seasons, after he looked quite promising a few years ago.
