Pacers F Artest fined $10,000 by NBA
    December 15, 2005

NEW YORK (Ticker) - Ron Artest is in trouble again.

The mercurial forward of the Indiana Pacers was fined $10,000 by the NBA on Thursday for publicly requesting a trade, a violation of the new collective bargaining agreement.

Artest's statements came in an interview published in the Indianapolis Star on Sunday. An All-Star and the Defensive Player of the Year in 2004, Artest has been placed on the inactive list by the Pacers.

A release from the NBA said Artest was fined for "making public statements detrimental to the NBA." A statement from NBA senior vice president and general counsel Rick Buchanan explained the punishment.

"Public trade demands by players was a subject discussed at length during collective bargaining negotiations this summer," Buchanan said. "The damage caused by these kind of statements was commonly understood, as was the NBA's intention to hold players accountable for such statements going forward."

Before being placed on the inactive list, Artest was averaging 19.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and a league-leading 2.63 steals in 16 games.

Last season, Artest was suspended 75 games - the longest non-drug ban in NBA history - for his major role in the brawl at The Palace of Auburn Hills on November 19, 2004.

After a scuffle on the court with Detroit Pistons center Ben Wallace, Artest was hit with a partially full plastic cup thrown from the stands and charged into the seats, attacking a fan he believed threw the cup.

The incident triggered a full-scale riot between players and fans and led to changes in security measures at all NBA arenas. Artest later faced criminal charges but was sentenced to probation and community service.

In the 2002-03 season, Artest was suspended for instigating an altercation with Miami Heat coach Pat Riley and fined and suspended for smashing a TV camera after a game at Madison Square Garden. He also got into a shoving match with a Pacers official after a postseason loss.

$10,000 isn't going to stop anyone from doing this. They should have made a harsher penalty.

$10,000? Dont get the point of NBA fines when they are so cheap. Artest probably carries a $10,000 note in his pocket.

If penalties really do go into that NBA trust fund for unknown charities, 10K is a lot of money....

$10,000 is nothing for Artest. He will work few hours in Best Buy and get that in no time.

Agreed. A one-game suspension w/o pay would be a little better. The suspension wouldn't matter (the guy wants out anyway) but the one-game check would be a good penalty, scaled according to pay salary. 10K is a joke to anyone with a real contract, but a game check for a maxed out player would be more along the lines of $145,000. A guy just making the minimum would face 12K.

I'm usually not too hip to the NBA fining players, but I can see why public trade demands are so frowned upon.

Think about what we could have gotten for Pippen had he not made it so clear we needed to get rid of him immediately, and what does the traded player care? He obviously doesn't want the team he is traded to to give up much- he wants to be traded to a good team and he wants his former team to suffer.

I think trade demands should be behind closed doors.

Basing the amount on one game's pay (and giving the money to charity) seems fair to me.

I think people should be fined when teams leak trade discussions to the media as well.

Well, taking the half-season to demonstrate just how badly he had fallen off because of his back didn't help matters much.

So.....we've got the Surreal Life, and the Road Rules/Real World Challenge/Guantlet shows. We need ESPN to merge the two and bring us the Surreal League. Use the template from Battle of the GrindIron stars or Bowling night, but just load up those rosters. Rodman, Owens, Artest, Sprewell, Canseco, Ryan Leaf, shoot for the stars!

I wouldn't be worried about $10,000 being too small. This is the first offense of this kind they've punished. This is the warning to the players in the league. The league can escalate the amount if they want if they get more infractions.
