OK I added a bigger hard drive, went to 512mg memory and upgraded from ME to XP Home.

Now my Outlook Express is giving me a 'report error' message and shutting down every time I try to open an e-mail or open a new message. I'd like to just delete it and reload it but when I try it says some program is using it and it can't be deleted. I found one fix that said to edit a value deep in the registry, I did but no help.

    Help!

Prior to opening any messages, go to File->Folder->Compact All Folders and see if that helps.

U can try to repair Outlook, by going to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Compoents. One of the options should be Outlook, if not click on Internet Explorer instead (which is a part of Outlook), and go through the repair.

You can also disable the error report popups by Right clicking on My Computer>Advanced>Error Reports>Disable.

No Luck yet. Did I mention that the e-mail text shows in the preview window, it's just when you try to open it that outlook suts down. Also when you try to open a new message.

The first time it happened, the first time I started XP, it asked for a Windows 2000 Office disc I don't have. My wife borrowed a disc form someone at her volunteer job so she could work on sometning once. So I'm guessing Outlook is lookng for a program to show the message that isn't there.

The poroceedures suggested above still won't let me delete Outlook to re-install it.

    Anyone? Ferris?

If I was you, I would download another email client and see if it will import all your OE stuff to it...then never use OE ever again.

    try Eudora.

OE is very, very buggy...and using it leaves you open to all sorts of problems.

If you must use it...maybe try going to miscrosoft's site and download the newest version and see if it will install on topof your current version..

here is a link to a listing of email clients you might want to try.

I suggest downloading Thunderbird, which is Mozilla's standalone mail client. It's very stable, free, and has excellent spam filters. You can also import your outlook files.

OK I installed Eudora, so I can atleast get and send mail, but my address book did not transfer.

I'm just used to looking at Outlook Express and still would use it . But when I try to reinstall it right off the Microsoft sight, it says a newer version is already running and won't install. So If anyone has a suggestion let me know.

Earlier this morning I started in the Safe Mode and deleted the Oulook Express file, then reinstalled XP off the disc. I thought that would give me a clean install (without my address book) but when I started Outlook the address Book was still there and so was the problem.

do a search on your computer for a .pab file.

Im not sure if that is the extension OE uses, it is the one Outlook uses.

then copy that file to a different place...then try to import the copied file into Eudora.
see if that works and then we'll go from there.

Upgrade to XP Office as well and it will switch you off OE with a set of prompts....

Crap, I just tried to look up a map on MSN maps and I got the same 'report error' message and it closed explorer. I'm thinking I have a corrupted file in some Office funtion that brings up forms.

One guy above suggested loading XP office but I'll have borrow a copy, it's a couple of hundred bucks. I wouldn't trust a Morpheus copy,

Think buying an older office 2000 copy would help? I'm just pretty sure the one my wife borrowed is the culprit. I remeber ayear or two ago, it needed to have a SR-1 (?) update but because I didn't own the disc so I couldn't get the service pack and now something won't work with the XP upgrade.

    (ugh! Bill got me)

The MS Office XP Student/Teacher edition is fairly cheap. I believe Best Buy was selling it for $129.00. It includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. The licensing is fairly liberal and you can even install it on 3 'family' computers.

Im not a big fan of XP Office...it doesnt offer that many new reasons to go with it over Office 2000. and Outlook by default blocks attachments that you might want to use..It would be one thing if it just blocked .vbs, .scr, .exe...but it alsoo blocks Excel files and a few others I dont remember at the moment.

If you can get a copy of Office 2k...I would try that instead.

Sounds like your problems go deeper than that.

at this point..backup all your data...wipe the drive and install XP from scratch..(Im assuming you upgraded ME to XP without doign a clean install)
When XP first came out, I heard of alot of people having problems with upgrading in place from earlier versions (95,98,ME) to XP.

If you arent desperate enough to go that route yet...try going to WIndows Update and see if installing the IE6 SP1 or XP SP1a(which are the most current service packs) wil solve your problems.

Actually I didn't do the install. I had the guy at UBM Computers do it. I went from 384 to 512 on the RAM and he put in a new 40G hard drive and loaded XP on that and then moved the data from my old 20G to the new one with XP. We were going to wipe the old one and add it as a slave once we were satisfied the transfer went smoothly so, I still have all my data on that hard drive. I have already run all the available updates from Microsoft.

Will the office 2000 run OK with XP? I have access to the same Office 2000 disc my wife put on before, but again it kept asking for an update (SP1?) and I didn't have the certificates since some one donated that disc. (Before anybody reports me to the Feds my wife does excel files of donations for a charity organization and wanted to be able to work on them at home) (By the way she used Outlook to send in her Excel files and it seemed to work)

I think I said somewhere above that when I started this new XP
it asked for the office update so I deleted the office file. I didn't have a clue that it was intertwined with Outlook and IE. So , I feel like loading Office 2000 will solve my problems, I just better pay for a copy though.

Office 2k works fine with XP...thats what I use.

yea...everything is intertwined with everything else..
    IE and OE are intertwined...
when you install the newer edition of IE..it will install OE with it.

    ok...

Im unsure of what problem you are running into with certificates with the updates.
Whenever I install updates it never asks me for anything..the only certificates I know of are the digital ones that certify that a piece of software has been certified to work with XP or not.

ok..let me get this straight...you have been unable to uninstall OE? and your IE is malfunctioning also..

try this...have you tried uninstalling IE?
Even tho it is theoretically tied in with Explorer...youshould be able to uninstall the web browser..if you can...you should uninstall it and reinstall with the most current version from Windows update.

also...to cover all bases...get that disk back(Office2k) and uninstall Office and reinstall it also.

at this point...It may just be easier to reinstall XP fresh.

sounds like you have mucho system files messed up.back up your OE data to the slave drive...wipe the primary drive and reinstall XP....it should go on clean..and then you can reinstall Office...and then import your mail files into OE..

    geez...what a pain huh? ;)
