After downloading Windows XP SP2 I found my bittorent program working slower than before -i used to get 200 kb/s now down to 70kb/s and IE seems slower. Then I found this interesting tidbit " SP2 limits the number of open ended tcip connections you may find that if you are a p2p user, bit torrent, kazaa, winmix, emule, etc, may not work as well as before when you install the SP2 update. a reason MS did this is to limit the # of open doors for worms, and spammers. an article about limiting the max # of connections. search for articles on event 4226. http://www.9down.com/modules.php?na...le&sid=3220 a registry tweak will not work but you will have to patch the tcip.sys file to increase the # of connections. a link for the dude who wrote the patcher. http://www.lvllord.de/?url=tools#4226patch a mirror for the patcher and changelog. http://www.relaxz.net/files/index.php?d=Patches "
What works better with the XP SP2 that actually makes it worth it to bother downloading? I honestly am considering downloading it but need more info to see if it is really worth it... Any scoop?
Thanks for the post. Now I know why when returning home with new DSL that my laptop wouldn't download at broadband speed. So is it easy as the page says to install that patch? Just download it, increase values and you're done? I need to go on a downloading splurge when I have a break in college this fall.
it definitely does something.. i was still gettting good download speeds, but upload was crap... my rating are screwed
Not if I've got programs already, and flawlessly might I add, doing what SP2 will do. There is no reason for me to install this thing when it will affect 99% of what I do on the web. F-SP2, I may never install the thing.
If ya aren't sure if you want to download it or not, atleast order the cd for FREE! Free shipping/handeling too. Then you will have the cd so that if you do decide to install it it's right there.
ok I thought I installled SP2, but maybe that was on the laptop i returned a week ago. I dont know if I have it on my new computer, so how do i go around checking that without downloadin it again?
According to TraJ's site, there isn't much of a difference from SP1 and SP2. I don't have either, and my PC is working fine. I could order the CD, but I don't want to give out my info to Microsoft.
So has anyone installed the patch shown here? Any proof of improvement? I did feel like my Bit Torrent was goign too slow given the number of seeds the other day... and I couldn't seem to download from more than about 20 at a time, even though there was almost 400 available...
All you have to do is disable the new Windows firewall feature when you are d/ling from a P2P service. However, d/l's are still slower when you disable the firewall, but not as slow as with the firewall on. I wish I hadn't d/led SP2 on my laptop. Luckily, I haven't done it to my Desktop yet. and i WON'T!
yeah same here i don't like SP2 at all. I did it on both my laptop and desktop at the same time and i can't stand that i did.
thats why I use my Linux box to run my bittorrent client.. seriously...Im running sp2 on my main video box, and havent noticed any slodown on my newsgroup downloading...just remember to disable that damned MS firewall after you install it....it aint worth a damn...if ya want to firewall...get Sygate or Zonealarm.
I've been staying away from SP2, at least for now anyways. I'm not really needing to fix flaws in XP due to programs I already have that fix them. I've heard stuff about SP2 messing up programs and stuff so I've decided to just stick with updating all my stuff and keep on with what has kept me virtually spyware, or anything else bad, free. I think I head about some report about 1 out of 10 users have had problems with SP2 and that Microsoft has put out this long list of programs that are not compatible. Stupid Bill Gates.
