Hi, we're finally getting the xbox 360 in australia come march. I just had a a question if someone could help me. Has anyone bought the core system which includes the console, controller(with cable), face plates and other stuff. It will be a cheaper package here ($499)? compared to the other package which will be going for roughly $650, it includes an external 20GB hard drive, wireless controller and other goodies that i can't remember. 1) I'll be just fine getting the $499 version won't i? its the same console and not having the wireless controller doesn't bother me. 2) I can save on the console without needing the extra 20GB hard drive? All i need is the console and a couple of controllers, the guy at the shop is telling me that there is no demand for the core system because its 'crap'. But if it's the same machine, whats the big deal?
If you don't get the hard drive, you'll need to pay like $40 (well, here in the US anyway) for a 64MB memory card (as opposed to like $100 for a 20GB hard drive). Without the hard drive, I don't believe you can play Xbox games (outside of Halo and Halo 2 I think), and you probably won't be getting the best use out of Xbox Live (game demos, trailers, patches, extra content, etc.); I also think some games take advantage of the HD and are a bit quicker with it. Basically, while it isn't necessary, the HD is a great thing to have, IMO. A lot of the early hardcore gamers want that stuff, so the r****d..uh.."core" package isn't really what they're looking for. They're basically (core and premium package) the same and you'll be able to play the same games and all, but the HD just adds a few things, or makes those things easier to do.
I got the core, and then bought the HDD and 2 wireless controllers.... You need the HDD to play old X-box games...and they have upgraded several... DD
