For the first time since it launched, the 360 became the best-selling console in a month (in the US anyway). Here are some sales figures for April (again, only US and only console and handhelds):

    360: ~295K
    PS2: ~207K
    XBX: ~39K
    GC: ~38K
    DS: ~138K
    GBA: ~169K
    PSP: ~162K

Top 25 Software sales (by $, not units):
As you can tell by the rankings, the 360 had some nice SW sales, which factored into its 4.5 tie-ratio.

    100+K sellers:
    KHII (PS2) ~536K (1.1+M sold in a little over a month)
    GRAW (360) ~158K
    Oblivion (360) ~152K
    Godfather (PS2) ~136K
God of War (PS2) ~130K (1+M sold LTD)
    MLB ’06 The Show (PS2) ~129K
    MLB 2K6 (360) ~128K
    MLB 2K6 (PS2) ~117K
    Tourist Trophy (PS2) ~114K
    Battlefield MC (360) ~113K
    Tomb Raider Legend (360) ~104K

Some PSP and DS numbers since they're mostly absent from the rankings (mostly due to the ranking by $):
    PSP
    MLB '06 The Show ~46K
    Daxter ~41K
    GTA LCS ~35K
    Dragon Ball Z ~26K
    Fight Night 3 ~20K
    NFS ~18K
    MLB 2K6 ~15K
    From Russia with Love ~12K
    Cabela ~7K
    Bust a Move ~5K

    DS
    Brain Age ~90 K
    Metroid Prime Hunters ~69K
    Animal Crossing ~43K
    Tetris ~41K
    Mario Kart ~35K

There is a nice Xbox/Xbox 360 sales comparison on another forum, which I might post later on if there is any interest in it.

That's crazy how many units the PS2 is STILL moving. You'd think everyone already had one by now.

Damn, the PS2 is out selling the XBOX by more than 5 to 1! It is almost selling as many units as the 360! Crazy.

Yeah, you're right. It's even more impressive that they're doing it despite the DS being GBA compatible. That would be like the PS1 still selling in large numbers.

This is the first month since the 360 was launched that the PS2 hasn't outsold the 360.

Amazing. Any chance they keep the classic PS2 controller for the November release of PS3?

RC, you didn't watch "The Video Game Revolution", did you? :(

With these numbers, the 360 has sold ~1.5M in the US so far according to NPD. Based on MS shipment numbers, I believe they shipped ~3M consoles worldwide through April (IIRC).

Determining on if the 360 has been successful depends on your definition of successful. The SW numbers have been pretty good considering the systems available. The HW numbers could be a lot better IMO, and it might come back to bite MS down the line (1 year advantage, but couldn't take advantage of it). The 360 should be selling a lot more than this IMO...and I don't think demand is a problem right now...at least, it better not be. If I post the Xbox numbers next to the 360 numbers, maybe that will help determine how successful the 360 is...or maybe not.

Depends on what you mean by classic PS2 controller. The PS3 is basically a PS2 controller, except that the L2 and R2 buttons are triggers, it can sense motion (at the cost of rumble), and it is wireless. Otherwise, I imagine you could get a USB adapter and hook up a PS2 controller.

I tried, but it wasn't available on my TV. I think I might have seen it before then though.

Here are the numbers for the Xbox and Xbox 360 through the 1st April for each console, courtesy of sonycowboy at the neogaf forums:

    Again, just US numbers.

I want to use the PS2's controller... even though I haven't tried the new one... can I still use the old one?

You have to be pretty stupid to be buying a PS2 at this point.

You'd be surprised how much it will sell for in Mexico...

I imagine you could definitely use it for PS1 and PS2 games on the PS3, but I'm not so sure about using it for PS3 games. It would depend on the game and implementation, but the tilt-features used by the PS3 controller (as well even the triggers to a degree) might make it difficult to use a PS2 controller for a PS3 game. Developers would have to program for both controllers basically, which kind of ruins the point of using the features that the PS3 controller offers. If a majority of developers take advantage of the new controller, you might be forced use the new controller.

I wouldn't think this would be that much of a problem though. Again, there isn't that much different between the PS3 controller and the PS2 controller. If you like the PS2 controller, you'll probably like the PS3 controller just as much, if not more so.

Wise words, my man. Thanks. I guess I could go test it out, as soon as I get rid of this cast... know where I can go see it or feel it?

Try to get a ticket to Japan during September so that you can test it out during TGS (Japanese version of E3). Otherwise, you'll have to wait until launch to try it out yourself...unless you can get some PS3 developer to let you try it out before then. Maybe DaDakota will be working on a PS3 game. :)

    I imagine it feels a lot like a PS2 controller...only a bit lighter:

They ditched that design, probably due to the criticism it received. They unveiled this controller last week during E3.

Notice it also has a home button, like the Xbox 360 controller. OMG, the copycats strike again. :)
