I need help on getting this situated. The Xbx 360 has a cable sized port in the back of it. I have a phone line with a phone line sized port in it. Is there a recommended Cable to Phone line adapter out there that y'all would use or should I suck it up and pay the $100 plus for the wireless adapter.
How good is the wireless adapter. We have a linksys wireless network set up in the house but if that is down, so is the internet on the xbox...

    Any advice would be appreciated.

The jack on the back of your xbox is actually a tad larger then a phone line. You can get Cat-5 cable (network cable) from any place that has electronics and be able to plug it directly into your wireless router as long as there is a free port on it. This is a lot cheaper then buying the xbox wireless adapter, but not too feasible if your router is significantly far away from your xbox.

I don't have an xbox 360, but I'm fairly sure that that's an ethernet adapter, and plugging your phone line into it won't do anything because it isn't a modem. Like TBPlayer said, you need a cat5 cable going to your router, which in turn goes to your internet source such as DSL or Cable Modem.

Also going from friend's comments, you don't want to go wireless if you want that split-second advantage in competitive games like Gears of War. Wired is the way to go in this case.
