i want to know the features, like if it upconverts regular dvds (it better) and if it plays SACD and DVD Audio.
Really. I have an excellent Sony upconverting DVD player, with HDMI, for my 1080p, and it's sweet watching the Superbit version of The Fifth Element in 540 pixels. That would be another question... does it have HDMI?
i hope it up-converts. This drive pushes the cost of a 360 to $599...suddenly the ps3 is looking like a good deal... imo no one is going to win the format war. They'll merge into one and the big losers are the first adopters....

I still think its a crappy marketing tactic to have you spend $400 on a machine, and then have the option of spending an additional $200 on the upgrade...Yeah, the $400 is sunk, so you're only spending an additional $200, plus the $100 you need to get WiFi...That's $700... It's definitely not you're Daddy's Atari or Sega...
I don't think it has HDMI. IIRC, the 360 would have to have it, and right now, HDMI isn't supported by the 360 AFAIK. Maybe in future revisions though.
i agree with the format war but this doesn't push the cost of the 360 up at all. the HD drive is an option and for people who simply just want a next-gen consle the 360 only costs $399. there are many many people who have no intention of upgrading from dvd to hd-dvd and you're not forced to pay for that option whether you want it or not, see ps3.
True, I didn't buy a 360 for movies! i guess for people who own HD-TV's, the format war will eventually mean something... As of right now, I could care less. Release the star wars trilogy on hd-dvd, then i'll start caring...
I have an HDTV, and I've seen HD movies at showrooms on 1080p TVs, and it looks awesome. I sure hope it doesn't take forever for this stupid "war" to play itself out. I don't care which format wins. I just want a format that'll stick around, like the DVDs we have now, that will make use of the high technology display many of us have. That, and a huge increase in HD channels from Time/Warner!
They really need to get on the ball about this and what a rip off to have to pay the $7 extra a month for ESPN HD. Its not much but with all the other stuff it adds up, it should come with cable standard like tnt, etc.
i just joined the ranks of HD myself, but I still don't see a reason to go out and drop another 800-1000 bucks on a entirely new format. Especially when I have all that I want on the standard dvd. I'm going to wait at least until the end of next year to move towards blu-HD (this is what it'll be called when they merge It's going to be a mess at the stores with this format war crap. What are they going to do? Have 3 rows for all three formats? Again, alienating the consumer only pisses them off, which in turn means no cash for you mr. sony.
So you're telling me in practice, that we should just get used to spending $400 for playing games...If we want it to do more, we need to spend another $200... I know, a little sarcastic, but in reality, that's what we're talking about...If you want to game, it'll be $400, but for that kind of money, at least me, I want more justification for spending $$...At least with the PS3, you know what you're getting...It make cost a lot, but there is a reason why...
How much will it effect the quality of a video game? Is it mainly for movies or will the games also be enhanced with the new drive?
I'm old enough to remember the Betamax/VHS debacle. Why in the hell did they go this route again?? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Just for movies. There have been rumors that they might use HD-DVD for games down the line...but I'm guessing that MS (and 360 early adopters) are hoping it doesn't come to that.
Unfortunately i think it will, being that I'm an early adopter. I've learned over the years that if they have a chance to make extra money with certain add-ons that they will at least test the waters.
I don't think they'll do it just to make extra money. They'll only do it if it becomes apparent that DVD won't be enough for games in the next 5+ years. In that case, MS would have to make HD-DVD available to developers, or they'd have to make a new console or something. Best case scenario for them is that this never becomes a problem (and HD-DVD will matter only for playing movies). BTW, in case you guys haven't seen it, here's the drive:
it probably wont. you're a b*stard with that 1080p! the HD content (movie trailers, music videos) from xbox live marketplace look outstanding on my component. I only have 1 hdmi/dvi slot and I use that for HD Cable.
Agreed, that is the news you want to here if you already own a 360...I'm a late on the format differences, but wouldn't a game format in the HD-DVD be better, but be a space hog... btw, that thing is huge...Its almost as big as the 360...
