What a great hero. I think it will be sooner rather than later, that the Landlord Landrys, and the bassos of the world will come to realize their lack of support for equal rights concerning gays was a bad choice.
Awesome, it looked like a tear fell from him just towards the end too. My grandfather was on Omaha beach too..... These men are dying at more than 1000 a day...the last survivors of the biggest war. This guy is a hero, and I am proud that men like him sacrificed so much so that this country could thrive. Heed what he says, for it is why his generation is truly, the "Greatest Generation" of all. DD
Not to derail the thread, but anytime I hear the Greatest Generation, I think it obviously diminishes others. WWI was no picnic and neither was the industrial revolution and the Progressive Era. The Civil War era was absolutely critical to our existence as a country. Without a generation of pioneers, our country would probably end at the Mississippi River. The folks who shaped the new America had to deal with a number of issues that made a difference, not the least of which was the British invasion in the War of 1812. Then, there is the Revolutionary era and the creation of a new form of government, which speaks highly of that generation.
All true, but having to got through the depression then WW2 and in some cases both WW1 and 2...makes them the greatest generation IMO....followed closely by the founders of our country...actually those would be neck and neck to me. DD
why? so you can hit me with one of your *******, r****d, f*** you, teaching your kids to hate, ignorant kook, religious nut-jub, blasts? Maybe you could toss in another hate crime euphemism and ice the cake. I'd rather force myself to listen the Black Eyed Peas' disgusting attempt at music than debate anything with you.
Very touching video - thanks for posting, but unfortunately 'calling out' Landlord Landry has ruined any positive discussion that may have occurred. I think LL's post above is pretty much spot on.
I think the new show "modern family" might do more for the movement than Ellen and (ugh) Will and Grace combined. Gays are being accepted like Jews after WWII. That said, the Government can make this REAL easy and just recognize all marriages as "Civil Unions" and let religions define "marriage."
LL has stated several times that he opposes equal rights for gays and teaches his children that homosexuality is wrong. Why wouldn't I be curious for his response to this video? He's exactly the sort of person that needs to watch it.
I disagree wholeheartedly. I went to Bellaire in the 80's, which was predominantly jewish. Didn't care one way or the other. Then I read about pre-WWII Europe when Germany was simply telling Jews to get out of their country. No country, including the U.S. accepted the offer. It was only until we "KNEW" about the genocide (and the hatred was so much so that countries that should've known still had a blind eye.) along with Hitler gaining ground everywhere that folks started caring. If you haven't looked back on WWII history, you need to. I was amazed going into the British Holocaust museum. No offense to gays, but you've never even been universally despised as the jews were. I still can't really figure out exactly the original reason, though.
Or why can't you just let them get married? There is no sanctity in marriage given 60% end in divorce.
Andrew Sullivan at The Atlantic has talked about this. There was a time when this would have been a possible compromise, but that time passed when there was so much opposition to it five or ten years ago. The gay community sees that it has momentum on its side. There is no reason for them to settle for "civil unions" when the conservative groups started out by waging total war on any recognition at all for gays. If the situations were reversed and the conservative "defense of marriage" people had the upper hand in the direction of public debate, they wouldn't stop and compromise. It would be like the USA agreeing to a cease fire with Germany the day before the 3rd Army crossed the Rhine. There is no reason to stop now when there is no chance for accommodation with the "enemy" (for whom civil unions and gay marriage will still be "abominations before god"), and victory appears pretty likely down the line.
