On a certain posters request, this thread is where fans can talk about wrestling. What would you do differently with the programming if you were Vince McMahon? Personally I'd focus more on in ring action and less on cheesball stuff backstage.
Some of the ring action is poorly done. My dad told me that the Undertaker had put his hands up early while Triple H was going to Pedigree him, at Insurrection. This, and other mistakes make some things look kind of bad. I also have a hard time with the "Undefeated Wrestler." You know, the guy who can't be put down by even 99 chair shots. Then, later 1 chair shot knocks them out. That said, I enjoy wrestling. I like that they have men and women's wrestling also. BTW, took you long enough Ref.
I haven't watched wrestling in a year or two, but if they brought back that hidden camera thing where a cerain wrestler would be shown on the Titan Tron doing something really embarrassing in their dressing room, i'd watch again. Did that angle ever go anywhere? What was it called, GTV? Did they ever reveal who was behind it? It seems like they were on and off with that whole thing...
I don't think they did. I think they just quit one day. But I was unable to watch Smackdown for a while, so it may have been explained then. Then again, maybe I forgot who did it, if they did say. That was pretty entertaining. Remember when Val Venis asked why they called the Big Show, the BIG SHow.
I know what you mean RC...but actually Taker is known as having some of the best ring work in the business. He kept Mick Foley alive through Hell in a Cell in 1998. Excellent ring worker. His workrate is starting to suffer...but he's around 40 now. It's amazing that he has performed at this high of a level for this long. Does anybody remember before Taker joined WWE? He was Mean Mark Callous in the old NWA. He was a part of Kevin Sullivan's "Varsity Club" with Dan Spivey, Steve Williams and Rick Steiner.
That was the only example I saw of him messing up, but it was the most recent. (Sorry Taker.) I don't remember that, but one of my earliest memories was of Taker fighting Papa Shunga. (SP?) My dad may remember though. One interesting story he told me about was when he met some wrestler about maybe 20 years ago. I don't remember his name at the moment, but I think it had "bruiser" in it. He was a pretty big guy too. Well anyway, my dad and mom were fishing somewhere and he showed up. My dad showed him how to put a crab to sleep, by rubbing its belly. He said it was funny because when the crab started walking around, the big, huge, tough wrestler ran away like a chicken. Well, those weren't his exact words, but that's what happend.
You will probably identify Papa Shango more with his recent gimmick. He is now called The Godfather. Yup...same guy. The wrestler your dad met could have been the late, great Bruiser Brody. He was stabbed to death in a lockerroom in Puerto Rico. The case has never been solved. Another possibility is Dick the Bruiser.
Hmm... really! They seem so different. Maybe I got the name wrong, but I doubt it. If it was a guy with face paint and always use to beat his belly, its the same guy.In a related story, a movie came on today that had Rikishi on it, back when he was apart of the Headhunters. HE WAS SKINNY! He did a the jump over the rop entrance, and my dad goes," He can't do that now." BTW, I want to say Brody, but I could also be wrong on the Bruiser part. Its been awhile since I heard the story, so I may ask him tom...today. edit: just saw a pic, and it is the same guy i was thinking about. Do you know how long ago that was?
The guy with face paint and beating his belly could be Kamala. Did he have a huge belly and a wooden mask he would wear until he got to the ring? If so it's Kamala. If not, it may be Papa Shango. I believe Taker wrestled both of them. On an unrelated note...if you were Vince, would you have killed off the nWo? I would have...but had Bischoff bring it back at the PPV.
I havn't seen a full show of the WWE since the first night that Shane took over WCW at Spring Break... Anyways, they shouldn't have brought back the nWo. The reason it went over so well the very first time around was the fact that a lot of fans weren't sure if The Outsiders actually worked for WCW or they were still working for the WWF... Now when the WWF, oops, sorry WWE is the only player in the game you totally take the 'who are they working for' out of the picture and the nWo just becomes another stable...
After seeing a pic, it was Papa Shango I was thinking about. The belly beating guy was another wrestler. I forgot his name though. Real fat. I remember Kamala when he barely came, so it wasn't him. Wasn't Kamala have like a fighting dude gimmick, or something like that. Taker has been my favorite wrestler for almost his whole career, except this new gimmick doesn't quite appeal to me. Then again, it is cool to see him mad, and ready to kick anybody's a...uh.. butt. I think the nWo was cool when it first started, but after awhile, it got stupid. It had like 90 wrestlers in it, then it split in 2, and then you have guys coping it like the LWO and BWO. Maybe it was WCW's fault, though. As for bringing it back, that's alright with me. Actually, I think my dad said something like you did about the nWo. edit: Please read my 2nd post after this where I explain my stupidity with my Kamala reference. IDIOT.
The nWo could work again. They were starting to do it right and then Big Sexy got hurt. I think they'll bring it back when he returns. this is a picture of Kamala.
DANG IT! MY MEMORIES ARE GOING AWAY! I CAN'T REMEMBER ANYBODY! Yes that was the other guy. I'm getting him mixed up with the Godfather's previous gimmick. I got KAMA and KAMALA mixed up. Darn gypsies put a curse on me. Well most of these memories happend when was probably in the 6-10 range, so I can't remember some things correctly.
I understand...geez...I'm old. I remember Kamala wrestling in 1987 like it was yesterday. In fact...I was a freshman in high school that year. So anything from the late 1980s wrestling wise you want to know, ask me quick before I go senile on you.
WOO, BOY! I made a fool of myself in my earlier post.(the second one before your pic.) I said I remembered him starting out, if that was true, I'd have been 1 year old. Pretty good memory if it was correct. DARN CURSE. I may have remembered kamala later in his career, or maybe when he came back in one of those legends matches, but it certainly wasn't when he started out. BTW, unless my dad got a bad case of Alzheimers,(SP?) he could probably remember things like that, so don't feel old. Heck, my cousins may remember too. They're a couple years older than me, so they may remember.
Wrestling stuff I can remember: 1) Gordon Solie 2) Dusty Rhodes being suspended and came back as "The Midnight Rider" 3) Barry Windham as US Champ. 4) The original 4 Horsemen. (Flair, Arn, Ole and Tully Blanchard) 5) A really young Sting 6) Hogan's first title run 7) WrestleMania III (still the best show I've seen) 8) The Dynamite Kid 9) The Western states championship 10) Larry Zbyszko wrestling in his prime 11) Magnum T.A. 12) When there were 3 PPVs a year (WrestlMania, SummerSlam and Survivor Series). I could go on and on...yikes. LOL
Well let me try: 1. Stone Cold 2. DDP 3. Shane That's all I can remember.......just kidding. ALthough the real list won't be much better. 1. Stone cold as the Ringmaster, and when he was in WCW. (blondes.) 2. When Horwitz(sp?) won, H won! 3. Taker vs Taker (actually, this was rather late.) 4. Taker vs Yokozuna 5. Ted Diebuease (SP? ) had his little money group 6. When a chair shot was an immediate DQ, people got counted out, and over the rope was a DQ. 7. Shawn and Kevin Nash, aka Diesel, were together. 8. The armstong brothers in WCW. Couldn't seem to get a win. 9. Uhh... a... bunch of PPV's. 10. 1-2-3 kid 11. Sting before the Crow-like gimmick, but not much before. Most of these aren't that long ago, and I could probably go back further, but I just decided to do these instead. These probably seem like yesterday to you too, huh?
Sadly...yeah. Although I do like the one about people getting Dqed and counted out. I think wrestling was better when they acted as though it was a legitimate sporting league. To really enjoy wrestling you must have the willing suspension of disbelief. It's hard to do that when they don't enforce the "rules."
