WWE legend Chyna -- real name Joanie Laurer -- has died ... and officials are investigating as a possible overdose, TMZ Sports has learned.

We've learned she was in her apartment in Redondo Beach, CA ... south of L.A. -- and police got the call around 7:30 PM. Our law enforcement sources say she had not been seen or heard from for a few days. A friend went to check on her today and found her unresponsive in the bedroom of her home and made the call to police.

Laurer also had problems with substance abuse. She claimed that her "life was spinning out of control" around the time she made the sex tape.[84] In January 2005, Sean Waltman claimed that she was battling drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental illness.[92] Days after the domestic dispute between Waltman and Laurer, it was reported in the New York Post that she had stripped naked and jumped into a fish tank in a New York nightclub.[92] That same month, she made another appearance on The Howard Stern Show, where she was slurring her words and going off on random tangents.[92] On the program, she claimed to not want to do drugs anymore, but said that if a line of cocaine was in front of her, she would do it.[92] After her appearance, she entered a facility specializing in helping people with depression, and she decided to stop drinking.[84] In early 2008, Laurer appeared on the VH1 reality TV show, Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, but she claimed on the show that she did not consider herself an addict.[94] On December 27, 2008, she was rushed to the hospital after her birthday party, where she was found passed out with cuts on her arms.

I wanted to take this opportunity to first apologize for Chyna’s behavior and obvious not showing this past weekend at Wrestlecon.

Just to give all of you an idea on how hard we worked to get her to Dallas, we received a call at 6am Friday saying she had missed her flight and no one could find her. When she was finally located at about 11am Dallas time, she was incoherent and not of proper mind. Through her slurring she asked that I please purchase a NEW airline ticket for her costing another $352 on top of the already $800+ that was spent on her and her manager to miss the first flight. Knowing how much Chyna meant to all of you we purchased the ticket again only to find out that night she checked into the airport but just never got on the plane.

Since Saturday, we have been in contact with Eventbrite and finally figured out the issue and have corrected it. We needed to wire back to Eventbrite all of the ticket sales so Eventbrite can personally refund the tickets since its not a one or two person thing. This has happened today and we should exprect the refunds to be completed by Friday from what I am told by Eventbrite.

Once again I am sorry for Chyna’s actions and hope that all of you will return next year to Orlando for WrestleMania 33 and WRESTLECON!

Once we know who we will be working with, we would like to send each of you an offer code for 20% off any ticket orders for our guests as our way of saying we are sorry.

I heard she even made a scene with Triple H at Piper's funeral while some were wondering why she was even at the funeral since she wasn't close to Rowdy

Sad. I heard she was a good and nice person
I was not a big wrestling fan during her time but even i knew of her

Fans were not kind to her
and it seems like the business wasn't either

I often wonder how come it is so hard to leave the spot light.
I don't know her whole story but I am sad for her passing

Sad, but what in the hell did i just watch?

Hearing her gulp down all of that made me sick to my stomach. It was disgusting...whatever she was doing. I need to read more, but she was drooling all over herself and had half of the damn smoothie hanging out on her face. The repeated discussion of a "beautiful day" shows what all of those various substances did to her cognitive functioning. My goodness.

I hope Chyna is in some sort of peace. She was living her own personal hell.

The brain of former WWE star Chyna has been donated to CTE research following the wrestler's death last week, her manager said Tuesday.

Chyna, whose real name was Joan Marie Laurer, was found dead at the age of 46 in her Redondo Beach, California, apartment last Wednesday. While there was no indication of foul play, police still have yet to determine cause of death, the Los Angeles Times reported, after the Los Angeles County Coronor's office deferred its ruling pending additional investigation.

It could be weeks before the results of toxicology tests are known.

Her manager, Anthony Anzaldo, told NBC4 in Los Angeles that her brain has been given to famed researcher Dr. Bennet Omalu to see if there were any effects of CTE -- chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

"We want to donate her brain," Anzaldo told The New York Daily News. "We want to know what made Chyna tick."

CTE, which is believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head, can be diagnosed only after death via an examination of brain tissue.

Dozens of football players who died have been diagnosed with CTE -- including Ken Stabler, Frank Gifford and Junior Seau.

The tall, muscle-bound, raven-haired Laurer billed herself as the "9th Wonder of the World" because her wrestling predecessor Andre the Giant had already called himself the eighth. She was a member of the wrestling squad D-Generation X, often wrestled against men and at one point was the WWE women's champion.

After leaving WWE in 2001, Laurer was determined to stay active in the entertainment industry. She wrote an autobiography, became a semi-regular on Howard Stern's radio show and appeared in TV sitcoms like "3rd Rock From the Sun" and reality shows including "The Surreal Life." She posed for Playboy and appeared in adult films.

Laurer later came clean about her struggles with drugs on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew."

I wonder if Mick Foley will donate his brain as well. He took a lot of unprotected chair shots to the head. The Sports Legacy Institute looked at Chris Benoit's brain after his murder/suicide and found it was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient. It's not surprising since his finishing move consisted of jumping off the top rope and hitting his opponent with his forehead.
