Woods to Swap Golf Spikes for Army Boots

    By DOUG FERGUSON
    AP Golf Writer

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Tiger Woods sometimes adds green to his wardrobe in April, but that usually means a jacket from Augusta National - not fatigues from Fort Bragg.

The day after the Masters, the world's No. 1 golfer will swap his spikes for Army boots.

Instead of retreating to his lavish home in Isleworth, Woods will stay in the barracks at Army Special Forces headquarters and spend a week in military training.

"If I was never introduced to golf, I would be doing something like that," Woods said. "Hopefully, something in the Special Ops arena. It's the physical and mental challenge of it all. We'll see what happens."

No one is more curious than his father, an ex-Green Beret who trained at Fort Bragg, N.C., during the Vietnam War, and then taught his son to take no prisoners on the golf course.

uh... Special Forces? maybe he should start out with just regular basic training?

That does seem a little strange, but our commander and chief could be anybody, and that has worked thus far, so What the hell, let's see what happens.

I know his iron shots haven't been very good lately, but this is getting a little drastic...

I totally believe he can do this without any issues. That guy is strong.

Just so you know, SFAS has less to do with strength and more to do with mental toughness. While SFAS is not as harsh as basic training, it is no whistling dixie stroll in the park. I seriously doubt they will go about their business as usual. There are few groups who train as hard and as tough as SF do. Does anybody recall Riddick Bowe and boot camp?

Ya cuz Tiger Woods is a mental midget. Seriously, I think he will do just fine.

A week? What's the point of that? Are taxes paying for this? If he wants to train at Fort Bragg, I insist on a 2-year tour of duty. :p

Meh... one week is nothing. Stick it out for a few months and I'll be impressed.

Ignorance at it's best. I never said anything about his mentality being weak. I just said it's more mental toughness than physical. Of course he'll do just fine because it's a publicity thing. I know a guy who is training to be a SF medic right now. No one thought he'd make it through selection, but he did. On the flip side, my former team leader went through selection and didn't get selected. This guy was everyone's favorite prospect for making it through. My point is not that Tiger can or can not do it, but rather that you can not predict whether a person will make it or not based on what you perceive as his strengths and weaknesses. My example is Riddick Bowe and boot camp. Boot camp may be tough, but it's nothing compared to the level of SFAS. Riddick Bowe could have easily made it through but he quit. Most of it is in the head.

I know this is a joke but SF is at least 3 years on an A-Team which does not include selection and training. I may be wrong on the exact length.
The SF and Delta operators are getting out of the Army because they are being assigned to basic infantry tasks which they do not want to do due to the increased risk of death. Kinda sucks when no one wants to be a Green Beret anymore.....
