Someone stole a 12" sub-woofer out of my trunk today.
This is pretty weird. I went to work late so I parked my car in the garage about 12:45 PM. The sub was there. I get back to my car at 5:30 PM. No signs of anything wrong - nothing opened or messed up. I turn the car on and notice the audio has no bass - all settings are OK - I open the trunk and the sub is gone. Someone just disconnected the 2 wires from the box and took the whole thing.

The thing that bothers me the most is how they got in the trunk since it was locked. I looked and did not see any marks or damage that would indicate forced entry. Also, why would someone just break into a trunk, its not like every car has a sub-woofer. The other weird thing is that they didn't take anything else!! There are 2 amps in the trunk as well.

I ll replace the stupid sub, that's not the problem since all the connections are there, I just have to connect the wires but this makes me wonder...how did someone know I had a sub - its a pretty big garage in downtown and why didn't they take anything else...now the amps are screwed down but still.

It also makes me nervous, are these people going to target my car again if I park in the same garage or should I park in a different lot? I didn't even bother reporting this - the garage doesn't have security and nothing would be done anyways.

    Very strange.

They most likely got into your car, and popped the trunk.

They knew what you had in the trunk from the looks of your system. Probably.

How did they get into the car? It was locked. Windows are fine. Doors look OK.
Also, the windows have pretty dark tint so its not easy to see whats inside.
They didn't take anything from the inside...they could of easily taken the stereo. It would make more sense if they actually stole more things...that's why it's driving me nuts.

Strange. They could have used one of those wires (like a clothes hanger) to (shimmy?) open the door my unlocking it.

Maybe your trunk was left open...who knows. They didn't take the amps, so obviously all they wanted was the sub. Maybe they already had a stereo they liked.

Guess you drove in with your music sounding too good.

    Thieves feel guilt, too.

The only thing that was playing was Sirius radio and the signal cuts out in the garage anyways. Didn't sound good at all :p

You either left a door open or they picked it. Then they popped the trunk. Locked the doors and shut the trunk. Not that hard to do.

What kind of car do you have? Certain car attracts thieves because of the ease to break into them. Also, they probably knew you had a sub because they could hear the sub. Did you have it cranked up any time while going up there? If there weren't any signs of breaking in, then you might have left your doors or trunk accidentally unlocked.

I guess they could have popped the door open. They must have been very slick because the weatherstrip on the door / window looks untouched. I clearly remember locking the doors and the trunk was locked as well. The car is a Charger. The stereo was not playing when I drove into the garage and it was afternoon so there wasn't anyone there....there was 1 car that came in before me and one after me. I didn't see anyone walking in the garage, leaving their cars or going to their cars.

I guess there is no point in going over this over and over again. It happened so I am just going to move on but I just can't stop thinking about why someone would go straight to the trunk just for the sub which is the cheapest thing out of all the stereo components...even the set of the 6x9 speakers is more expensive than the sub..not to mention the amps.

Would it help to get a security system for the car? Personally, I don't pay attention when other alarms go off so I am not sure if that would help.

Slim Jims are used to unlock automobile doors without use of a key or lock pick

hmmm maybe someone just walk up ... slim jim ur ride ... quickly pop ur truck to see what's inside (maybe didnt need a headunit) ... saw ur subs ... quickly unplug and put in their car and took off .... too much hassle trying to unscrew the amps.

    slim jim ... open truck...unplug subs .... close truck n lock door = 20sec

    I'd look in the mirror.

It's not that expensive to just buy a new one... no need to file an insurance fraud claim and risk prison.

    j/k

    Or am I?

So whats the best way to prevent this from occurring again. I have to park in the same garage 5 days a week. I lock the doors, I don't leave valuable items inside the car (or at least where they can be seen), I do not turn up the stereo in the garage, I don't have anything fancy on the outside of the car that would attract people, no 21" rims or anything like that...

I do not have an alarm system. I am considering installing one now.
I am also considering parking in an outdoor lot instead of the multistory garage because there are more people outside during business hours than there are in the garage. Anything else...serious suggestions please...I already told my mom to stay away from my car and my trunk ;)

If you have upgraded your radio and spent a decent amount, you should get an alarm.

You need to bring down to the dealership and have them change the password for the remote. People with a remote master will just drive around town all day clicking certain models -- sounds like they just had the trunk master since they didn't get into your glove box/ etc.

It's a long shot, but if they thought someone might have seen them, they might have been smart enough to go for the less obvious item(s) in your trunk and hope you didn't notice anything was missing until you got home. That way, you wouldn't have any witnesses to question. Personally I only access my car's trunk like three times a week, so that tactic would have worked on me.

    Again...long shot, but it's a strange situation so I don't know.
