it's also illegal to have 'limo tint' (ultra dark) on the driver and passenger front windows, things hanging from your rear view mirror (obstructs your view), mirrored tint, any lights that are blue (except those that the manufacturer installs like on BMW's, etc) as well as colored lights on the hood of your car where the wiper water comes from.... but you don't see them cracking down on these fools do you? The police will enforce this for a few months then it will go by the wayside like the rest of these 'laws'.

The interesting thing about that, and the people it will affect the most will be the auto dealers.

Next time you think about it, look at your car or cars on the road. 90% of the frames from the dealerships cover all or part of "TEXAS" on your plate.

I always wondered if you could have like 11I1I1 as a plate. What are some others that would be difficult to figure out for a cop?

Honking in the wrong part of NY City will net you a $300 fine.

If the cops are looking to harrass someone, but they stay in the speed limit, use their blinkers, their lights are in working order, they keep the music low and everything else -- well, maybe they've obscured "Texas" on their license plate. Now, they can pull the guy over, ticket him, notice mar1juana smell on his clothes, search the car, plant some drugs, arrest the guy, be 'resisted' and beat him silly with a night-stick. It's always good to have new tools for cops to fight crime with.

Ok, I'm joking, kinda, but it will be used as another one of those pretext pull-overs. Other than that, though, the law makes good sense -- one's license plate should not be obstructed.

Man, they should just take their cues from the Dallas Police and just make up crimes to arrest people for. You don't need a legal pretense. Just make something up, get the prosectors in line somehow to convict these people for things that aren't against the law and if someone is actually going to protest the arrest, assign them a public defender without their knowledge to come in and plead guilty for them without letting them even know there was a hearing.

Or, you just plant pool chalk on them and arrest and convict them for cocaine possession.

    That's the Dallas way.

I was adamant when I bought my new car, that there would be NO dealership labels on my car. And there were none. I did tell them they could put a license plate holder, which I removed once I got home. I told them that when people asked me where I got my car, I would tell them, but I wasn't advertising for them.

This will be used more than you could imagine, especially in poor neighborhoods. It's just more nitpicking bull to generate more money and harrass people. I suppose police can't tell where a plate is from as long as the word Texas is obstructed in some way. Whatever...

    Or a witness.

COP: Did you get the license number?

    WITNESS: Yes, it's 503-PVD.

    COP: What state?

WITNESS: I couldn't see the state, it was obstructed by the frame.

COP: Well, we're boned then. I mean, what are the chances that it's a Texas plate here in the middle of Texas? And if it isn't, then how could we possibly check records for fifty different states? It's just not possible. Another criminal gets away.

That is BS. This is simply another law that will be put on the books that will never be used. It is a law so the State can say they did their part to correct what some feel is wrong.

There is a law in Texas when you are on the side of the road (including pulled over by a cop) you MUST engage your parking brake or you will be fined.

How many "nitpicking" cops in "poor neighborhoods" (or wealthy ones for that matter) look to see if you engaged the brake?

Do you really feel everything that is in place to get at particular group or certain people?

Where is the large contingent of concerned Texans lobbying so that the word Texas is no longer obstructed on license plates? Engaging a parking break has safety considerations but you can hardly pull people over because their parking brake isn't on. How many nitpicking cops are going to be pulling over Mercedes in River Oaks because the word Texas is obstructed? Get outta here.

I don't (and I know you weren't talking to me necessarily), but I also have talked to some smaller town police officers (or DPS officers patroling smaller towns) who patrol areas with major highways who have mentioned they use these nitpicky laws so they can pull over some one they find to be suspicious.

Of course, I know of one Panhandle officer who told me he pulls over anyone who doesn't look over at him when he's driving beside them. he considers that "probable cause" that they're doing something wrong (usually drug possession, in his opinion), so it doesn't take such laws to have a pretext to pull someone over.

Unfortunately this dealer puts the emblem on all the cars in the lot.

Cops already have enough pretext laws to justify a pull-over. So, I'm not too worried about its use to exploit the people. A broken tail-light, rolling through a stop sign, not using a blinker, all will work just as well.

If they are anything like Gillman Subaru, it is only on with adhesive and can easily be removed. They removed mine when I took my car in for service.
