Sorry, forum police, but this is important! I know everyone is sick of sending emails but city council is on our radar. Their vote to determine whether or not the city funds its portion is essential. We are not asking them to approve funds because they agree with the arena. We just want the right to vote on it ourselves. Even those who don't want an arena should understand that. Then, if it fails in November, at least we got our shot. You can send emails here: http://www.saveourrockets.com/email.cfm or, you can fax and call them by using our contact list - faxes and phone calls are even more effective than emails: http://www.saveourrockets.com/contact.cfm Thanks!!! ------------------ Save Our Rockets and Comets SaveOurRockets.com

Not sure if you guys had a reply, but I got one immediately from Annise Parker that reads: Dear Rockets/Comets fan: Thank you for writing about the arena proposal. The new proposal involves a contract between the Sports Authority and the Rockets to fund the arena with bonds, paid off with hotel/motel and car rental taxes collected by the Sports Authority. County taxpayers will vote on this contract and decide whether a new arena is built. City Council will vote only on an interlocal agreement between the city and the Sports Authority. The city is being asked to purchase the land and provide infrastructure for about $25 million. These funds would come from Convention and Entertainment Facilities Department enterprise funds. As you may know, such funds can only be spent in that department for convention and entertainment-related items and cannot be spent on police, libraries and other city needs. In return for the $25 million expenditure, the city: 1. would own the facility and parking garage(albeit leased to the Rockets for 30 years); 2. receive 5% or $200,000 a year (whichever is less) for naming rights; 3. receive 20 days of arena use 4. receive a free office for the Convention and Visitors Bureau. The current proposal is certainly a better deal than the one that was turned down last year. As before, though, I am most concerned about the non-compete clause that would cripple the marketability of the Compaq center. I believe Council will try to amend that. I would also support increasing revenues under items 2. and 3. if we could get enough votes on Council. Once again, thank you for writing. Sincerely, Annise D.
