This apparently is one of the biggest awards, if not the biggest in U.S. history. I hope they print his lawyer's name so we can find out who the next street sweeper for the city of Chicago will be. http://www.cnn.com/2007/LAW/06/05/megadivorce.ap/index.html
Wonder what Eddie Murphy would say about this one? Disclaimer: For those of you under the age of 20, I'm referring to "Eddie Murphy's Raw" where he joked about Johnny Carson's (Tonight Show host before Jay Leno) divorce in which he was forced to give up half of his fortune.
Totally ridiculous. He makes the money, but she gets half for being a "trusted confidant" - so "trusted", that she filed for divorce. It's plainly obvious that men get screwed in divorce court, but it's still mind-boggling to read about it in cases such as this. Although, I guess, in all honesty its worse for struggling middle class ex-husbands than this guy...
Whoa Whoa Whoa people, this couple had been married for nearly 30 years. We are not talking about a quick marriage. She was with him and he with her when they were dirt poor. Its not like he got rich, married her then divorced her. They were together the whole time. Now if the man has that much liquid assets available, I think he should rebound from this pretty nicley. He is the CEO of a pretty large company.
i'm with you. in texas and other community property states, this would be exactly how it would play out. you keep common bank accounts....you earn money together...you support one another. when it falls apart its seems inherently obvious to me that you split the resources in half, as much as possible. and i don't feel a bit sorry for a guy whose half equals roughly $180 million. putting all disagreements about the process aside, i can't get to a point of sympathy for that guy because of economic reasons.
i think the automatic half assumption is flawed. Surely she is entitled to something b/c they were together for so long but SHE calls for a divorce and gets half???
let's also point out, the "irreconciliable differences" weren't pointed out in this story. we have no idea what led to all this.
yeah, seems odd. the article says 'she filed for divorce', and not the couple filed for divorce. Maybe he was messing around and she didnt want it to get ugly for professional reasons. still, like eddy murphy would say...'aint no p*ssy worth that much"
not to sound too sober, but i'm thinking Murphy's comments are nearly irrelevant in a 30 year marriage. this wasn't a one-night stand....or even a Britney Spears-sized marriage. that she filed means next to nothing with relation to who was done wrong. or who was done wrong mostly.
He must be a pretty reasonable guy. With that kind of money, he must have had professional hitmen lining up at his door.
1. This is Reason #2325 NOT TO EVER GET MARRIED 2. We all know what Chris Rock would say . . . . Rocket River
absolutely. if you don't want to share your life, including your money, with someone....don't get married. but why is that such a shock?? i guess i'm used to living in a community property state where that's treated as a given. i think that reflects pretty well what i understand marriage to be to begin with. if you don't want that...fine. or if you want to contract around that...fine. you can do those things. this guy did neither.
That's pretty easy to say when you have a great marriage and you have never had everything you have ever had taken from you. Regardless, I've obviously not learned my lesson since I'm saddling up again next month
actually, this would be reason #1 to get married...if i knew i could afford to lose $184 million in a divorce.
I can imagine the conversation between the guy and his lawyer. client: so what's the verdict? lawyer: well i got some good news and bad news client: ok whats the good news first? lawyer: they awarded her half your assets client: omg i have to pay her $200 million? what could be worse than that? lawyer: actually she got $184 million...you owe me $16 million in attorney's fees before she gets her cut.
