When we lived in Houston, in the Aldine School District, and my daughter was in 6th grade, the teachers were not allowed to give grades below 60 (D-). If a student did not do an assignment, they were not given a failing grade.

That was ridiculous to us and we met with her teachers and principal. We had to write a letter to the superintendent, the principal and all of her teachers saying it was OK to give her the grade she deserved. If she deserved a 0, give her a 0. If she deserves 100, give her 100.

Three of her teachers made it a point to follow up with a phone call saying the truly appreciated what we were doing.

That's a lot of banter for 2 parties that have no power to actually give out a 0 grade.

What do you mean? Once the letter was written, the teachers had the power to give out the grade.

I think what they're doing is consistent with the real world. If you don't work, you get unemployment or welfare. Might as well teach them how to get by, with as little effort as possible, at an early age.

I had some courses where you didn't have a cut and dry zero, but each day an assignment was late you had 10-20 points automatically deducted from the grade. A zero is tough to swallow if it's a matter of a simple mistake (leaving it at home), because it's so difficult to balance it out, even with perfect scores.

That said, I'm hardly in favor of this no-zero policy.

Sorry but you don't understand how unemployment or welfare benefits work.

Not working won't get you unemployment unless you have worked, and that work ended under specific conditions. You may continue to get unemployment unless you prove you are actively searching for employment.

There are also requirements about able-bodied people searching for work regarding welfare.

Well they've reduced the amount of people on welfare, and only a small percentage of those on welfare are actually cheating the system.

The majority of people on welfare are senior citizens and the major expense for welfare are medical expenses.

I wish they did that in my middle school. I got an F in Algebra when in the 7th grade because I didn't do any homework assignments. The system was you started out with 5 points bonus to your average, and got a point deducted for homework assignment you didn't turn it. I didn't turn any homework for a 6 week grading period so I got 25 points taken off my average. My average was a 94, so I ended up with a 69. My math teacher hated me.

I also hated notebook quizzes. I got B in high school health because of that crap.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to... I'm fine with the participation trophy, as long as the kid knows that there are bigger trophies if they actually win.
