I would like to voulnteer in this project, but screw the nature pics, I am going in with the RPD pics....
that picture with the pervets at Black's Beach is funny it's amazing how much detail the camera picks up
It's about the camera. Click on one of the photos to look at them. Then read the captions. They are cropped from the original photo. The fact that its so clear and you can see so much with great quality is whats amazing.
oh yea ok i see. like on regular pics when u start zoomin in too much the picture be lookin too blurry and stuff right?
Actually the camera doesn't cost that much. It is a regular large format comara using kodak film. i imagine the camera setup cost less than 10 grand and most of that is the lense. What probably cost the most money is the scanning mechanism and the machine to process it. They are talking about multiple gigabyte files so you have to have a lot of ram. All these guys are doing is taking a picture with 9x18 inch film. So the negative is over 200 times as big as standard 35 mm and scanning it at 100 pixels per millimeter. The technology is in the scanning and film. The camera technology has been around for 100 years.
Now that you've seen the camera, on this website you can ZOOM into a gigapixel image!! http://www.tpd.tno.nl/Pics/DII/gigazoom/Delft2.htm enjoy!
Thank you, rockHEAD, for posting this. I'm sure I would have missed it. And I know it's been said several times already, but that's bloody AMAZING!
