    GDC 06: Revolution Goes Retro
TG-16 and Genesis games due out for Nintendo's new console.
    by Nix

March 23, 2006 - In a press release simultaneously with an announcement made during Nintendo's keynote speech at GDC 2006 this morning, Nintendo announced that Sega and Hudson have signed on as partners for the Revolution's Virtual Console service. With this, the emulators will be best games from the two companies for the TurboGraphix-16 (or PC-Engine, as it was called in Japan) and Sega Genesis will be downloadable and playable for the Revolution.

Curiously, only Sega Genesis games were mentioned as planned for the Virtual Console system in the deal with Sega (um, hello? Master System? Saturn? Game Gear? 32X?!?), but the partnership promises that many of the best out of the Genesis' 1,000+ gaming library will be available for the Revolution. Individual deals will have to be worked out with publishers for titles to be released on the Revolution, but with a growing interest in classic gaming, publishers and license owners will hopefully be fast to get on-board with Genesis support. And considering that most of the TurboGraphix-16's games released were published and/or developed by Hudson and NEC, it seems that the vast majority of games for the system will automatically fall into that partnership without much more licensing work from the company.

With NES, SNES, N64, and now Genesis and TG-16 on-board, the Revolution has got years of gaming already ready to play as soon as it launches later this year. Look for more news on supported systems and licensed games for the Nintendo Virtual Console as things develop.

sounds good I loved the Genesis. Too bad they have the worst idea in gaming history with their new controller.

The 2-D games will be played with a regular controller, just wireless.

Well, the Gamecube controller still works on the Revolution. Might be good time to pick up those $20 Hori Controllers for some good retro gaming.

If it's that bad there's still the 360 or PS3...

too add to what has been said, it will have a shell to where you can play with a "normal" controller plus there will more than likely be a 3rd party "normal" controller

Ok, I'm a huge Nintendo fan boy I'll admit that before I post anything. But considering that every controller that was made in the last 20 years was based on something Nintendo did, I would bet the new controller is going to be awesome. Heck, even in the current gen, I thought Gamecube controller was really weird looking but it end up being the best controller of the current gen.

I'm waiting to see this at E3:

A "slight" redesign of the PS3 controller. :)

    edit:NOW, that should work.

Sorry about that. I was trying out a new image host and was in one of those "I can see the pic but you guys can't" situations. I think I fixed it now since it still shows up after clearing my cache. If not, it was just a Revolution controller with a Sony/Playstation twist.

edit: I think that host prevents directly showing the image (hotlinking?) or something since the image went away...again. I won't be using that one any more.

Nintendo certainly seems to be making a lot more good decisions lately than they had the previous generation. The DS is solid, good ideas for the Revolution download....now the only question remains is the new controller.

Which, if the DS touch screen is any indication, may work out fine.

A lot of folks would disagree. Certainly, the N64 controller had some good enough ideas that everyone else copied them.

I've missed playing gun games since they disappeared after Columbine....The occasional Time Crisis doesn't really count. It'll be real interesting to see how they made the new Zelda work with the controllers.

Keep in mind, if they launch the Revolution at 250, it'll be cheap enough to buy another console down the line.

no exaggeration at all I sincerely believe it is the worst idea I have ever seen. I am surprised I am the only one here who thinks that way. Who wants to play their games with a remote control?

You turn the controller on it's side and it's the same form factor as the old NES controller.. when playing classic games, what's not to like about it??

You do exaggerate though, you make it sound like people are going to be literally trying to play with a remote control like some lame DVD extra that comes on kids movies. It's basically a floating mouse and everybody who has had a chance to try it out has only praised it.
